Submission + - Radiohead with "name your own price" LP7

JP writes: "Radiohead have announced a new record http://www.inrainbows.com/ via their blog http://www.radiohead.com/deadairspace. The album is to be released ten days from now. What is particularly novel is that you can choose whatever price you wish to pay for the digital download only version of the record or you can purchase an LP/CD combo box. It's already sorta "slashdotted" via pitchfork and a million other news sites. Merge records also has seemed to follow this pattern of giving fans inexpensive downloads (with merge it's via emusic.com) or premium physical goods with high grade vinyl and artwork etc. I'm sure we are seeing the intermediate future of popular music distribution, although Radiohead have an obvious unique existing "marketshare" to be able to pull this off more easily."

Submission + - Toshiba Plans HD DVD Laptop Counter-Offensive

An anonymous reader writes: Apparently hoping to counter the "PS3-effect" on Blu-ray sales, HD DVD backer Toshiba says it plans to put HD DVD drives in all of its laptops in 2008 . While the manufacturer currently provides optional HD DVD drives for its laptops, Toshiba Senior Vice President Hisatsugu Nonaka said today at a news conference that all Toshiba laptops will come with HD DVD drives next year. "The demand is there; people want to watch their favorite movies in high-definition on the road," explained Nonaka.
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Lunar Crime to be Stamped Out

Oxygen99 writes: It's long been suggested that the moon can have a significant effect on the psychological state of humans. Although tales of werewolves are the subject of few academic papers, it's often believed that people get more violent, more insane or just plain more reckless depending on the phase of the lunar cycle. Academic opinion suggests this is largely a folk belief but Sussex Police , here in the UK, are to place extra policemen on the streets of Brighton when a full moon occurs, arguing that their research shows a definite link.

Given that the strength of the relationship between lunar cycles and physiology is so arguable, is this a worthwhile exercise or is it another victory for pseudo-science over empiricism?

Submission + - 30 days with Ubuntu (linux-noob.com)

znx writes: "How does the hype of Ubuntu actually stand up to an existing Fedora user? This guy has been using mainly Redhat based distributions for some time and took the leap to Ubuntu for 30 days to see how it stood up. Some bits are surprising and I'll admit to learning quite a lot about Ubuntu, there is even some very nice utilities that other distributions should take heed and replicate.

All in all this teaches us something very simple, you may profess that your distribution is the "greatest" but in reality all the big GNU/Linux players are up to the challenge."

Submission + - Warner Changes HD DVD, Blu-ray Release Strategy

An anonymous reader writes: Format-neutral studio Warner Home Entertainment is shifting its HD DVD/Blu-ray release strategy this week. While the studio has been the most aggressive among its peers in releasing movie titles to HD DVD that include interactive functionality, it has held off on releasing titles that include this functionality to Blu-ray until more Blu-ray playback devices are capable of decoding such features. This has led to much discontent among Blu-ray supporters, as it has left such high-profile titles as 'Batman Begins' and 'The Ultimate Matrix Collection' as HD DVD exclusive. With today's Blu-ray release of 'Blood Diamond,' however, Warner seems to have changed course — not only is the studio releasing a stripped-down Blu-ray version of the more interactive HD DVD release, but it's releasing the Blu-ray *a full month ahead* of its HD DVD counterpart. As High-Def Digest says in their review of the disc, it's a decidedly low-tech solution to a high-tech problem.
