As I understand it, credits are tradable "securities" backed by actual reductions in carbon emissions by a corporate entity relative to a predefined baseline. When a company buys carbon credits, it gets to claim a reduction in its environmental accounting. The seller of the credit, which actually reduced emissions, gets money but has to report less of reduction in its environmental accounting. In any case, real reduction in emission is required to give rise to credits. So I guess Panasonic incentivised reducers while also providing them with additional resources to possibly reduce more?
