12 Florida Schools Pass Anti-Evolution Resolutions 871

Several sources are reporting that twelve school districts in Florida have passed resolutions against the teaching of evolution. Out of all the arguments, however, one administrator seems to have gotten it right: "Then, the final speaker, Lisa Dizengoff, director of science curriculum at Pembroke Pines Charter School's east campus, angrily reminded the crowd that after all the carping over evolution, no one had gotten around to addressing the state's lackadaisical, last-century approach to science education. 'All I heard was this argument about evolution,' she said, disgusted that so many other problems had been preempted by a single controversy. 'The kids lost out again.''"

Briefcase Sized DNA Analysis System 95

An anonymous reader writes "Japan's NEC Corporation along with Aida Engineering have developed a briefcase-sized DNA analysis system that enables the police to perform comprehensive DNA testing at crime scenes in as little as 25 minutes. The same test would take at least a day to a week (if re-testing or conformation is required) in the lab. The system is compact enough to be carried to crime scenes or other locations where quick DNA analysis is required, making it the world's first portable DNA analysis system."

Australia Cracked US Combat Aircraft Codes 280

SpamSlapper writes "Former defense minister Kim Beazley has told how Australia cracked top-secret American combat aircraft codes in the 1980s to enable the shooting down of enemy aircraft. The radar on Australia's US-made Hornets could not identify most potentially hostile aircraft in the region — they were set up for European threats — but despite many requests, the codes were not provided, so 'In the end we spied on them and we extracted the codes ourselves.' The Americans knew what the Australians were doing and were intrigued by the progress they made."

With a lower stock voltage compared to the B3 stepping, along with a huge test field it seems clear that the G0 is a real winner. Hunting for the next G0lden CPU? TweakTown looks at the new G0 stepping SLACR Intel Q6600 to see if it can G0 for G0ld!"

Submission + - New 10th-generation LCD panel plant from Sharp (hdtvinfo.eu)

DaMan1970 writes: "Today Sharp hosted a press event to announce its plans for a new state-of-the-art LCD panel & solar cell plant in Sakai City (Japan)

http://www.hdtvinfo.eu/content/view/86/1/

The LCD panel plant will be the 1st in the world to use 10th-generation glass substrates (the world's largest size)

The LCD panel plant will be the 1st in the world to use 10th-generation glass substrates, the world's largest size (2,850 mm x 3,050 mm) 60% larger than the 8th-generation substrates used at Sharps Kameyama Plant No. 2. This 10th-generation glass substrate will yield 6 LCD panels in the 60-inch class, 8 panels in the 50-inch class, or 15 panels in the 40-inch class, making it possible to fabricate LCD panels for large-screen TVs with extremely high levels of efficiency & off course very cost effective for Sharp."

Submission + - JPC is now open source (ox.ac.uk)

Miguel de Icaza writes: "JPC, the pure java x86 PC emulator, is one of the coolest things I've seen done with FreeDOS in the last few years. An early preview demonstration was previously discussed on slashdot, but it is now GPL licenced for all. It allows you to boot an instance of FreeDOS in a Java window on your web browser. From there, you can run programs, games, etc. This presents a wonderful opportunity to embed FreeDOS in other systems, or to increase the availability of FreeDOS and DOS applications to users. And now the JPC team has made an important announcement: "Further to your interest in JPC (pure java x86 PC emulator) we are pleased to announce that, with permission of Oxford University, the source code to JPC is now available via the GPL version 2 open source licence." To try JPC or download the source code, visit the project website at: http://www-jpc.physics.ox.ac.uk. But does it run linux?"
