Comment Signal not anonymous? Then get Jami! (Score 1) 98

The only app that associates open source, end2end encryption AND full anonymity is Jami.
Jami doesn't need your phone nor impose a relation to it (you can create an instance on your computer), and doesn't use a central server for associations.

So,
- with Signal nobody can know what you tell me, but it's still rather easy to detect you called me
- with Jami, nobody can tell who you are talking to (and of course nobody can decrypt the message too).

If you want anonymity in addition to Signal features, Jami is for you.

Remember, anyhow, that the lack of a central server means, for Jami, that you cannot send me a message if I am not ONLINE at the same time as you are. You need me present for your message to come.

In other words, in spite of not demanding a phone to work, to be fluid I'd say Jami works better with it (and always on, like all other chats).

Jami is Canadian IIRC, and you can check the details at https://jami.net/

Sabbede, all you say is right today, but you may ignore that the present French president, Macron, was elected in front of a full-right-wing racist contender, who if she gets elected next time would immediately use such a law to track, explicitly, opponents (as defined by 'just not the same skin color, political side or nationality as hers').
So this law being repelled is not really a slap to Macron (only the most stupid left-wing say this), it's merely a manner to be more robust in case the worst happens.

Also, as I am to it, actually it is not at all a law being repelled indeed.
The French highest legal body just announced that as there is NO law allowing it, this should not be done (until there is a law).

And, that law is already being prepped for voting.

The next step then will actually be, is the candidate law going to be amended (explicitly eliminating police drone use, explicitly allowing it, or setting specific conditions like 'during a terrorist alert only')...

Comment Same here. Using OsmAnd. (Score 1) 121

and this, on a Fairphone with /e/ OS on it, so android but just no google apps. That's not so difficult, the /e/ Fairphone comes with everything preinstalled, doesn't cost more than ordinary smartphones, and with very reasonably strong technical features (processor, mem, cam...)

But I used OsmAnd way before getting the Fairphones indeed.

Comment Nitrokeys, then (Score 1) 69

I wouldn't have anything to spy on if I was going to a terrible enemy territory (there are far worse than China IMHO), but if I was, as concerns deniability I'd just take my open-source-open-hardware Nitrokey.
I have a relatively old 'storage' model, which features both a 'normal' encrypted volume whose pass I'd give once I see the wrench, and a manner of adding an untractable volume as long as the normal one isn't full (it's located in the unused memory). The same, open software unlock both or just announces nothing works if I don't give a correct pass.
I started this years ago, when I discovered I was loosing my USB key when bicycling to work. Still works perfectly.
