I stopped using PayPal years ago. I had someone claim that they never received a laptop I sold to them via eBay, even though all parties had my UPS tracking information that shows exactly when it was delivered and the guys actual signature showing he signed for it!

Since then, I've sworn off PayPal and will relegate myself to missing out on little things. I've gotten by just fine without it. The sad thing is that most people will not care until something like what happened to me eventually happens to them.

There is a DMG within the download that you can restore to a DVD or flash drive and it works fine, yes. The recovery partition boots a minimal version of OS X in which you can restore Lion but you have to log in to your Apple account and download it which makes the recovery partition a lot less useful.

I have and use both and they both work perfectly for me with no issues. The only downside is that the Wii does not offer HD streams but that can also be a good thing depending on if you have a bandwidth cap. As far as I know, the Xbox 360 version of Netflix will not let you turn HD streams off if they are available.

Comment I would LOVE to be streaming-only... (Score 1) 697

Where I live, I basically have two options for Internet service providers. The one I do not subscribe to is too slow to stream reliably, and costs about $110/mo. Their service is, however, uncapped.

Now, the ISP I do subscribe to has wildly varying bundles and tiers. When I signed up, I wanted unlimited transfers but the only way to to that is to bundle your cable Internet service with cable television. I pay $83/mo for cable television that I don't even use. Seriously, the DVR that came with the service has been sitting unplugged in my entertainment center for four months. My cable Internet service is $65/mo and I was extremely happy with it.

Up until about 5 months ago or so, a new transfer cap was imposed on ALL of their plans. I have the highest tier of service (22Mbps) and I am limited to a monthly transfer of 125GB. The only reason I bundled was because if you didn't the plans were hideously capped (we're talking like 3GB/mo).

The cable company, I'm sure, LOVES all of my free money. I stream our entertainment daily but I would like nothing more than to see some competition here so I can ditch my cable provider once and for all...

Comment The MiFi option works best for me... (Score 3, Interesting) 395

I use a Novatel MiFi device to provide Internet access to my iPad on the go. For $20/mo. I get unlimited data (within my state) and I have the ability to attach up to four more devices. I had rather go this route than tether my smartphone (tethering drains my battery pretty fast). The MiFi is tiny and fits in my iPad case, which is a huge plus. I would love 3G embedded into my device, but major carrier plans are ridiculously priced and limited at the moment (I'm looking at you, AT&T). If their pricing/cap structure ever changed, then I would consider a 3G-model tablet.

The proprietary software to configure the AP is a pain, but it runs just fine with Wine on Ubuntu 10.04 (one caveat, it didn't show up on a network scan, I had to specify it's IP manually). I have mine in bridged mode off of a Cisco ASA5505 and it works much better than anything I've tried. I can certainly attest to its reliability. It's worth the extra cash to not have to reboot your AP every week (Like my WRT54G running Tomato).
