Tuesday I made the mistake of reading some of John Taylor Gatto's essays, then remarking in writing to my daughter's teacher and her boss that "I believe you are a racist, a pathological liar, and a child abuser." Now her lawyer, paid for by the Oregon Education Association, is threatening to sue me for "defamation" and interference with business relations because I believe her actions in punishing my child for going to the restroom without first asking permission to avoid defecating in her pants amount to child abuse. (I believe unjust punishment is abuse.) I am now ordered to "cease making any statements which could interfere with her business relations" — in other words, I am not allowed to complain about how she treats my daughter, or the fact that my daughter isn't learning math in a school where 2/3 of African-American students don't meet the Oregon NCLB minimum requirements for math aptitude under the Adequate Yearly Progress report card. Of course, since the Oregon AYP minimum group size is 21 and there were only 17 African-American students in her school last year, the fact that they are failing to educate blacks at an alarming rate is irrelevant and marked as "Not Applicable" instead of "Not Met" on the AYP report card! (This is a huge incentive to small schools to avoid accepting any minority students because that would push them over the minimum group size limit and actually make them accountable.)
This is how far we have strayed from teacher responsibility — according to the OEA, not only do teachers have no obligation to insure that your child gets an education, but they will sue you if you complain about it, because it might cost them their job! I believe the best response to this barratry would be to publicize it as widely as possible. How do you think I should respond?
