Well, other than the fact that he did nothing illegal but got raided and harassed by police and probably has his name associated with kiddy porn all for leaving his wifi open. What difference does it make if he left it open due to ignorance or if he was just being nice? That facts are that an IP address is not a person and the police need to stop treating it as such.

I hate to break this to you but, your rent is paying someone's mortgage AND they turn a profit. And if their mortgage is paid, well, they are competing with people still paying one and thus price to maximize profit.

Your extra $ in rent are buying you the freedom to pack up and leave if the house/building goes underwater.

Shit pay depends on where you live/work I guess. District I work at teachers make far more than the average citizen in the district, pay FAR less for insurance, have far more paid time off, work shorter hours per day, etc. Basically, if you compare any compensation of theirs to the general public it is well above the average. Yea, they went on strike this year, half of them are douches to me and the rest of my team who, you guessed it, make less, work more, pay more, but we are the "administration" who is keeping all the money for ourselves and they don't make enough.

Local hockey equipment supply shop in my area went out of business probably about 10 years ago. It was awesome as they had a large selection you could actually try on before buying and talk to someone knowledgeable about the inventory. During their going out of business sale we talked to the management and they said they had tons of "customers" that would repeatedly come in to try on all sorts of stuff and leave empty handed only to return to try on tons of the next item and leave empty handed. They assumed (and rightly so I'm sure) that these people were using them as the fitting room for online places with cheaper prices. Now I have to drive about an hour to find a store with a much smaller selection. Yay for making up for your online "savings" in shipping costs to try on items.

Because I'm running the server?

Most of the subscription's justification in MMOs is that the dev/publisher is providing server infrastructure and the rest is content updates. I'd say you have a pretty tough sell to tell me I have to go rent a server off someone and then pay you tax just to use it. And all the content updates are made by some random internet guy for free. Essentially you are trying to get me to license the server software so that I can then provide you an opportunity to sell more copies of the client software (and the $5/yr fees) which I get no cut of. Now if you suggest the dev/publisher get in the market of renting servers, you may have something there.

But... at $5/yr people might be suckered into paying it.
