Well, from Australia, re. the last twenty years, that is accurate.

We just got rid of a VERY long-standing conservative government, who bent the country over hard. It's mind-boggling to see adults in charge again here, although our media is still largely owned by Rupert Murdoch. There are some articles saying Rupert does whatever is required to maintain power, but I've yet to see him lean left.

I know it's the internet, and yet I can't help but point out the ending of the first line in that very short parent post:

This is a result of politics, and the grift-happy administrations that enrich their chosen circles at tax payers expenses.

When I'm in the office my wife has to step up and drop off the kids. Otherwise it's always on me.
Do you think spending time with the kids equals a productive working environment? I take good care of them and if I were able to be just as productive at home, I'd obviously prefer it. But if I have to work late nights to catch up on stuff because I was busy during the day hanging out the washing, then it's a vote for solid work/life separation from me.

I'm with you, it's much easier for me to concentrate in a work environment. I don't have kids to drop off and pick up, the food in the fridge is off-limits, and people I might need to talk to are much easier to find.
At home I have kids to deal with, distractions and for some reason a to-do list from the wife, who seems to think that sitting in front of a computer is the same as sitting in front of the TV.

Not directly, but the erosion of general trust it causes is horrifying. I have a relative who is utterly paranoid now, and while it might be a medical condition, seeing all kinds of conspiracy nonsense online (and having it amplified by the mere act of looking at it and training the providers on your interests) is definitely a factor.

Just on that, as an Australian, there's never been any question of declaring that "Australia Day" be recognised as "Invasion Day" which has been slightly popular recently. One of the better reasons I've heard is that if it was admitted to be an invasion, officially, it would cause an incredible amount of change, because a defeated people have completely different (read: more) rights than those that have been "colonized."

I'm no expert, but I thought the general feeling towards nuclear power on slashdot was positive.

From other comments I've seen, the initial massive cost and long startup time goes a long way towards killing nuclear power, because in many cases we need it yesterday. And of course it's political poison.
