Comment I used to drive an actual taxi... (Score 1) 76

We each needed a mercantile license in the cities where we were allowed to pick up, so the police did a background check on us before we were allowed to drive a taxi. The people getting INTO the taxi, however, could be pretty much anybody: they all paid cash (or didn't), and even when you picked up at a known address you were taking your chances. We used to joke about getting "lead poisoning" from some random passenger.

Now, the passengers are all identified by Uber with at least a name and credit card number, but the drivers are anyone who can fill out the online application.

I work from home over a VPN. My life gets better every time I increase my bandwidth.
We're using "gigabit" Fios now, which is actually close to 900 Mbps in both directions, and it rocks. Even mundane tasks like sending or downloading a large file (we're buying a house) are SO much easier.

When we started the house search, I told my wife "no fiber, no sale." She agreed instantly, since she and her mother can do anything they want online without me complaining that they're interrupting my work...

Comment I've always been a paper map person (Score 4, Interesting) 121

When I was about four years old (1965?), I stood in the back seat of the Dodge and watched my father figure out how to get to Maine on a paper map. I remember thinking, "I'm going to have to do that when I grow up... this looks important."
After that day, in school and out, I was interested in maps. As soon as I started driving, I would take my battered Saab 96 anywhere the roads led: Provincetown, Tucson, wherever. Later in life, I drove deliveries, and spent a few years driving a taxi. I was known for my ability to get to places much more quickly than expected, only partly because of my heavy right foot. In Moscow, I had the translator tell the cabdriver he was turning the wrong way; I didn't need translating to know his answer was... not polite, but he was suitably apologetic when I was proven right.

That's why there's a 2019 Rand McNally road atlas in my Charger Pursuit. GPS is fine, if you take it as advice instead of instruction. Google Maps can recommend one or three different routes, but it takes experience and "navigation aptitude" to know the best way to get there...

No one can sue gun manufacturers for product liability, right?

Wrong. Nobody can sue a gun manufacturer for lawfully selling a product that is subsequently misused... just as you can't sue Ford because you crashed your car while drunk, and you can't sue McDonald's for 'making' you fat.

Salesforce can't force a law-abiding company to change its business practices because of their own rampant hoplophobia. Fark them.

Comment They let someone else use our account one time (Score 0, Offtopic) 129

My wife and I went to rent a video, and they charged us a $20 late fee for a game we did not recall renting. We paid it.
It turned out that nobody in our family had rented that video. I went back, and found out they had rented it to someone on a day & time when both my wife and I were at work. (The kids weren't old enough to drive yet).
So, they agreed that it was a "mistake," and offered to credit my account...

I said, "No, you took cash out of my wallet, and now you need to give me the cash back out of the register. If you don't, everyone behind me will be stuck in line here until you do."
Got the cash back.
