Anyone can write Palm WebOs apps and start their own App Store. The operating system is linux and completely open. JWZ's crap is already available via "Homebrew" installation on the Pre, including the precentral.net app catalog, browsable on the phone with a couple different apps for easy installation. TFA is specifically related to getting an application into the Palm Store. They have requirements, some of which may be arbitrary. But it's their store. You want to get crap into Wal Mart, you gotta obey their rules too.

No. No no no no no. No. Your "build it yourself" MythTV box IS NOT A TIVO. It DOES NOT have "more functionality" than a TiVo. If you had seen a TiVo and a MythTV box, you would understand. Yes, they both record stuff. That's pretty much where the comparison ends. Compare this to the old school of thought: "Why bother buying a servar?! You can just slap together some random parts and put slackware on it for free$$!!!". Um, no. Not the same thing.

Tivo didnt invent anything that wasnt already KNOWN. THey took existing hardware, tied it together with some nice software and see 'oo look at we invented'. The DVR was an inevitable INCREMENTAL improvement to the VCR.

Clearly spoken as someone who has never used a TiVo and has no clue what they do.

We're on opposite sides of this. My MMO of choice is Second Life, where standing around and chatting is what I do 95% of the time.

Aha, well. This explains everything you just said. Second life is not really a GAME, per se, it's a 3d chat room with flying penises and simulated sex. Which is cool, if you're into that sort of thing. But not exactly the same sort of MMO as CO* or WoW.

Only if you HAVE a spending limit. Many accounts do not.

I get the impression that TiVo is fighting a losing battle. At their prime a few years ago, most cable and satellite TV providers weren't offering a comparable DVR service. Now, almost everyone offers DVR as a service, and unless TiVo has lowered the price of their devices or service, its cheaper to go through the cable company. I have Time Warner, and I find their dvr service in many ways superior to TiVo. I don't have to have an extra box that requires an IR transmitter that i have to stick on my existing cable box. Not only that, but my DVR box (and I gather most others as well) has two tuners, allowing me to record and watch to separate programs. It seems like it is something Tivo is going to have a hard time competing with.

A) "DVR Service" != TiVo
B) If you find Time Warner's "DVR Service" superior to TiVo, your opinions are clearly not to be trusted.
C) Many (Most? All?) TiVo's no longer require an IR blaster; they can be hooked up serially or have tuners built-in.
D) Have you ever actually seen a TiVo?
E) DirecTV and TiVo are allegedly partnering back up again towards the end of this year for a dual-tuner HD DirecTiVo that should be the shiznit.

No, it was said above that the number of "Chinese (All Dialect)" speakers was close to, but less than, the total number of English speakers. Read again: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_total_number_of_speakers

Don't forget that when you buy a Kindle book you cannot lend, sell, or give it away. If you purchase an interesting book for your Kindle and your wife wants to read it, she'll have to buy her own copy or borrow your entire Kindle.

Seems to me that this severely reduces the value of eBooks, so they should really cost about 1/3 - 1/2 of the paperback price to make up for it.

Not true. You can, in fact, lend, sell or give your Kindle away. Amazon will in fact help you by removing your info from the device and wiping it from remote. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000FI73MA/ref=/ref=cm_cd_f_pb_un
