Comment HDDs are no better with SMART readouts (Score 1) 51

HDDs are just as inconsistent. About the only reading that means anything on them is the reallocated sector count, and that's mostly an indicator that the failure already occurred and you better get moving on replacement. It's not that hard to figure out if you've made a habit of paying attention to those readings.

Comment Always five years in the future, that metaverse. (Score 1) 48

I long for the day when we finally get the metaverse.
Imagine it.
an entire virtual, alternate plane of existence.
Running alongside our own timeline!
We will be able to freely interact with content generated across the world!
People from all over the planet, if they can connect to the Metaverse, all of human knowledge at their fingertips!
But for now we have to settle for less.
We have to settle for a near lightspeed global information network that allows us to do literally everything the metaverses promises.
But I assure you, we will not see a successful implementation of the metaverse in our lifetimes.

Comment I don't believe these features help the programmer (Score 2) 220

There's something that I find unsettling about the idea that we need to move resource management into the language rather than keep it controlled by the developer.
A lot of these ideas seem to be focused on eliminating the sort of manual memory management that C and C++ allow, which prevents developers from learning how to manage computer resources effectively. They don't understand what to do when something breaks at a level where the language is not holding their hand.
Look at how C pointers are treated as an arcane, difficult mechanism. It's a memory address, that's all it is, but look at how hard that concept apparently is.
It feels like expecting the car to steer for you while pretending that the steering wheel is an arcane mechanism that you can't figure out by looking at it.
