Except that they downgrade your photos.

I realize I'm still a n00b (I read /. for the educational value) and it's possible I'm wrong here, but I don't believe they do. I use Picasa to backup my digital pics, so I just downloaded a photo I archived there, and compared it to the original. The md5sums match. That's close enough to original for me: goo.gl/GKgs9

Wikipedia and the History of Gaming 240

Wired is running a story about Wikipedia's tremendous contribution to documenting the history of video games, and why it shouldn't necessarily be relied upon. Quoting: "Wikipedia requires reliable, third-party sources for content to stick, and most of the sites that covered MUDs throughout the ’80s were user-generated, heavily specialized or buried deep within forums, user groups and newsletters. Despite their mammoth influence on the current gaming landscape, their insular communities were rarely explored by a nascent games journalist crowd. ... while cataloging gaming history is a vitally important move for this culture or art form, and Wikipedia makes a very valiant contribution, the site can’t be held accountable as the singular destination for gaming archeology. But as it’s often treated as one, due care must be paid to the site to ensure that its recollection doesn’t become clouded or irresponsible, and to ensure its coalition of editors and administrators are not using its stringent rule set to sweep anything as vitally relevant as MUDS under the rug of history."

I don't believe the above is a troll.

What is missing from this discussion is the major difference in procedures. In female circumcision, the orgasm-producing nerves are removed in an extremely non-clinical setting. No anaesthetic, no sanitation, and the after care often involves rubbing ash or dirt into the wounds. In the other, the head of the penis is left intact, there may be anaesthetic during the procedure, and after care is sanitary. Even for non-clinical male circumcisions, a mohel's kit is generally cleaner than the knife used for female circumcisions.

Circumcision of males, I think, somewhat robs us of the fullest sexual experiences, as is similarly argued on female circumcision.

I will not discount the possibility that a male circumcision results in decreased sexual enjoyment, but female circumcision results in little to no sexual enjoyment.

Games Workshop Goes After Fan Site 174

mark.leaman writes "BoingBoing has a recent post regarding Games Workshop's aggressive posturing against fan sites featuring derivative work of their game products. 'Game publisher and miniature manufacturer Games Workshop just sent a cease and desist letter to boardgamegeek.com, telling them to remove all fan-made players' aids. This includes scenarios, rules summaries, inventory manifests, scans to help replace worn pieces — many of these created for long out of print, well-loved games...' As a lifelong hobby gamer of table, board, card and miniature games, I view this as pure heresy. It made me reject the idea of buying any Games Workshop (read Warhammer) products for my son this Christmas. Their fate was sealed, in terms of my wallet, after I Googled their shenanigans. In 2007 they forbid Warhammer fan films, this year they shut down Vassal Modules, and a while back they went after retailers as well. What ever happened to fair use?"

Also, if the employee's only life insurance is through his company, he would not have life insurance for a couple of weeks. PROBABLY no big deal, but there are no guarantees.

Check with the benefits administrator for your employer. Many life policies offered through your employer have "portability" or "conversion" options. Portability is cheapest, but either one will keep you covered. There's usually a very small window of opportunity to exercise those options though, so talk to them before your last day of employment.

The Media

Print News Fading, Still Source of Much News 140

CNet's Dan Farber took a look, not only at the popular news of how print media is dying a slow death, but also what contribution to the news print journalists are still making. According to research quoted, while the physical publications are quickly becoming a thing of the past much of the news that makes its way into circulation via blogs and other means still originates from the hard work of those print journalists. (We discussed a similar perspective on the news a week back.) "While the Internet is growing as the place where people go for news, the revenue simply isn't catching up fast enough. The less obvious part of the Internet overtaking newspapers as the main source for national and international news is that much of the seed content--the original reporting that breaks national and international news and is subsequently refactored by legions of bloggers--comes from the reporters and editors working at the financially strapped newspapers and national and local television outlets. [...] As the financial pressures mount--the outlook for 2009 is dismal--and the cost cutting continues, we can only hope that the original news reporting by top-flight journalists is not a major casualty."

Opus the Penguin Retired 218

garylian writes "Berkeley Breathed has announced that he has drawn the final comic containing the greatest penguin ever, Opus. The author is now going to write children's books. For those of you in your mid-30s and older, you remember Bloom County as a staple of the comic pages in a similar time frame as Calvin & Hobbes, and that time was probably the greatest the daily/Sunday comics have ever known. From running for the vice presidency to impersonating Michael Jackson, from gracing a ton of t-shirts to being one of the weirdest stuffed animals ever, from rocking in a heavy metal band 'Billy and the Boingers' to cleaning up Bill's hair balls, Opus was perfect for that time. And Bloom County would have been perfect during the Bush 2 years. Now, I'm going to pull out all my old Bloom County books and read them. After I dig through some boxes and find my old Opus dolls. I wonder what my kids are going to think of them."

Submission + - Electromagnetic Sensitivity?

bibliophage writes: "Here's an article from the UK's Daily Mail about a woman who has symptoms, including "hair loss, sickness, high blood-pressure, digestive and memory problems, severe headaches and dizziness," she believes are caused by sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation from household appliances, wireless devices, and other common technologies. After wallpapering her house in a special foil-backed paper, she claims her symptoms abated."
