Submission + - Microsoft refuses to assist police w/hot xbox 360

Karzz1 writes: "Microsoft refused New Zealand police demands for information regarding a stolen Xbox360. Apparently the hot Xbox was registered with Microsoft with details the police sought to apprehend the thief. According to Microsoft, "The privacy and safety of customer information was a "huge issue" for the company and the details could not be handed out.". Is Microsoft being truly altruistic or is there possibly something else at play here?"

Submission + - MIT Team Makes Light Chip

Anonymous Coward writes: "Now, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said they've overcome a major obstacle in harnessing the full power and speed of the light waves. It promises to solve a problem that's long plagued fiber-optic networks: Light waves gradually weaken over distances as they become polarized, or randomly oriented horizontally and vertically. The tools available to fix it are expensive to deploy on a massive scale. It's a promising development as bandwidth-hungry video puts a strain on networks and consumers demand seamless transmissions."

The Svalbard International Seed Vault will house the seed samples at a preservative -18C (0F), and could be used by post-apocalyptic people to feed a hungry planet."

Submission + - Hotmail is broken when accessed with Firefox

An anonymous reader writes: I can log in to Hotmail just fine using IE (well, as fine as it's possible to surf the net with the porous, sucking sponge attached to a Petri dish that is IE...), but trying to log in with Firefox gets me this:

Windows Live ID is unavailable from this site for one of the following reasons:

* This site may be experiencing a problem.

* The site may not be a member of Windows Live ID.

It's from the exact same computer at the exact same time as the IE login works. The link is the incredibly difficult http://hotmail.com./ And it worked earlier today.

Maybe we need to send this to that trial in Iowa?
