Comment Re:Run your own e-mail server (Score 2) 42

I found that PGP signing messages had an interesting side effect. When sending to Gmail accounts there is a non-negligible delay on receiving the messages, almost like they are actually doing a verification.

I run my own domain and email, have certs, spf, dkim, dmarc, everything, and still get labeled because none of that seems to mean ANYTHING, reputation is not part of any commercial email scoring.

OTOH, I run spamassassin, which checks for all of these, and I'd say it flags 98% of SPAM accurately, has a few false positives (due to broken sender), and 2% false negatives. Of the false negatives, Thunderbird catches probably 98% and has a higher false positive rate than spamassassin.

Older Volvos were limited to 130mph, or H speed rating.

The S speed rating corresponds to 112mph. I wonder if they are putting cheap tires on new Volvos now?

My Volvo came with Michelin V speed rated tires (149mph)

The 155mph limit on Euro cars was based on a gentleman's agreement, you'll find those in several limits (which are cheated).

Ugh, "chrome OS will improve", just like Android, right?! Leaving all the existing people in the dark.

I sure hope someone figures out the guts of this and writes a server that can run on a local machine and allow you to redirect DNS to that.

I bought Chrome OS devices for family so I don't have to deal with this crap. Now printers will be left dead in the water and unable to print stuff from Chromebooks.

Google has finally raised my ire and I'm going to actively avoid their products. Ironically MS was the hated company 20 years ago, but today I find their products to be more open to consumers than the crap Google pushes. At least I can have "root" on a windows device and can setup printers, etc. Yes stuff magically loses compatibility because nobody creates updated drivers when the OS changes, but Android has created more orphans than MS ever has.

What they aren't telling you is that Verizon is slamming new device sales with Call Filter Plus. While I'm sure they have "protected" themselves with legalese and buried it in contracts that you can't actually read, the reality is that they are automatically adding Call Filter Plus to lines when a new device is purchased.

I just bought a new LG phone after using my old phone for a long time, then I noticed the per-line price was higher than before because they added Call Filter Plus for $3 per month. I was able to use one of the Verizon "chat me" reps to remove the charge, but it still pisses me off that they slammed me with a new service!

Comment Not the real reason (Score 1) 194

Confirming your email address isn't the real reason they do this. Facebook mines the metadata from the headers of all your emails to see who you communicate with and how often. LinkedIn does this too, adding people to your timeline that are not connected to you, but listed as "Your contact, so and so...". I get these in my stream from LinkedIn because OTHER people who I have communicated with in the past, for mundane reasons, gave LinkedIn their email account and password...usually it's real estate agents that do this.

What you're doing is giving Facebook and LinkedIn a vast treasure trove of data points and interconnected webs of data that exceed what you alone would give them. Think of all the emails you get that are group in nature, now they can connect the other people together without ever seeing any of them directly.

As people age, their salary expectations increase, but often their skills don't.

If they were really as valuable as they think they are, then some enterprising company should be able to hire them all and out-compete the companies staffed by younglings. Obviously, that isn't happening.

Most people don't get old and wise. They just get old.

Said the guy who's under 40. What you don't realize is that with age comes perspective. What you think is some great hot idea, an experienced guy can tell you why it's a bad idea and poke holes in the concept.
