Virtually all respected colleges and universities with any sort of historically recognized quality are non-profit.
For-profit universities (if they can even be called that) are in many cases little more than diploma mills. The primary goal is to move bodies through the system as efficiently as possible and extract the maximum payment, not provide a usable education.
Private schools want profit first and everything else, like actual education, third.
Nope, what you described are for-profit schools. There are plenty of non-profit private schools that provide a great education and value their standards highly.

For people that have a good experience in college, the piece of paper means very little.
I didn't take college that seriously at first, and I almost flunked out, (but I did barely squeak by after I started doing better my later years).
But like the OP said, college is just as much (if not more) about what you learn outside the classroom. It's about shaping your mind to critically evaluate things, learning social skills, learning teamwork, teaching yourself how to function independently, etc.
I have no doubt of the fact that I would be gainfully employed even if I had flunked out given the magnitude to which those other learning experiences have impacted my life for the positive.
In an office, you might have a problem when the cleaning person tries to empty it. However, no worries since Apple products aren't often found in offices that can afford a cleaning person.
I see just as many Macs as PCs at my company and we have multiple cleaning people that clean every day.
