Comment Re: Reminiscent of the DEC Alpha (Score 1) 153

Did fx!32 kill DEC and the Alpha? Hardly. Piss poor marketing/sales and business strategy did.

I remember the Alpha with fondness. It was the one architecture throughout the '90's that genuinely excited me. I still get the jollies thinking back to playing with NT 4.0 running on an AlphaStation. DEC had a huge opportunity. They were in the right place at the right time, and the marketing droids still managed to fuck it all up. It's one of the great travesties of computing hardware history that they bungled it on such an epic scale.

At least the Indian guy calling me claiming to be from the "Windows" company and asking for my password won't be able to stay in business long.

You touch on a greater problem. One reason for the volume of robocalls is massive youth unemployment in places like India and the Philippines (itself a result of large-scale urbanisation). Until that problem is licked, technological solutions will only go so far.

The people in the US administration who oppose big government, favor the free market, claim to be the winners of the great American meritocracy, who follow an philosophy of rational individualism, who hate subsidies because they are 'socialist' are subsidizing internet access. If they had the courage of their convictions they'd leave all of this to be solved by the infallible, invisible hand of the free market.

The Powers That Be want socialism for themselves, laissez-faire capitalism for everyone else.
