Comment Re:PC shooter instead (Score 0, Troll) 193

"I have yet to turn on my 360, put in a game, and have it tell me I've only got two activations left before I need to call the developer and beg to have one more."

You're right; instead, you have to hope your 360 turns on and doesn't Red Ring. And when it inevitably dies (because, let's face it, you'll go through two+ every three years), you have to call the manufacturer and beg to have it fixed. On the bright side, the entire repair process only takes a month!

Oh, wait; I'm sorry. You were saying something about how it just WORKS?

Researchers Crack WPA Wi-Fi Encryption 311

narramissic writes "Researchers Erik Tews and Martin Beck 'have just opened the box on a whole new hacker playground, says Dragos Ruiu, organizer of the PacSec conference. At the conference, Tews will show how he was able to partially crack WPA encryption in order to read data being sent from a router to a laptop. To do this, Tews and Beck found a way to break the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) key, used by WPA, in a relatively short amount of time: 12 to 15 minutes. They have not, however, managed to crack the encryption keys used to secure data that goes from the PC to the router in this particular attack. 'Its just the starting point,' said Ruiu."

Wikipedia's New Definition of Truth 428

Hugh Pickens writes "Simson Garfinkel has an interesting essay on MIT Technology Review in which he examines the way that Wikipedia has redefined the commonly accepted use of the word 'truth.' While many academic experts have argued that Wikipedia's articles can't be trusted because they are written and edited by volunteers who have never been vetted, studies have found that the articles are remarkably accurate. 'But wikitruth isn't based on principles such as consistency or observability. It's not even based on common sense or firsthand experience,' says Garfinkel. What makes a fact or statement fit for inclusion is verifiability — that it appeared in some other publication, but there is a problem with appealing to the authority of other people's written words: many publications don't do any fact checking at all, and many of those that do simply call up the subject of the article and ask if the writer got the facts wrong or right. Wikipedia's policy of 'No Original Research' also leads to situations like Jaron Lanier's frustrated attempts to correct his own Wikipedia entry based on firsthand knowledge of his own career. So what is Wikipedia's truth? 'Since Wikipedia is the most widely read online reference on the planet, it's the standard of truth that most people are implicitly using when they type a search term into Google or Yahoo. On Wikipedia, truth is received truth: the consensus view of a subject.'"

Submission + - Second Life's Open Source Fairy Tale

darthcamaro writes: Apparently things are going really well for the open source version of the Second Life viewer. So well that there are not multiple builds for different Linux distros and a new open source plug-in architecture is being developed. From the article:
"What has happened is the fairy tale version of what people hope to have happen when they make proprietary code open source," Rob Lanphier, Linden Lab's director of open source development said. "Which is people download; start adding features. It's crazy cool all the things that are happening right now."
User Journal

Journal Journal: I went ahead and made some Foes.

Two of 'em get this dubious honor because they're completely unable to hold a rational conversation about space weaponry. One of the guys added me as a Freak... and AFAIK, I've had zero contact with him. The last one just didn't have anything in common with me, so what the hell - might as well spice stuff up.

Journal Journal: Foes & Freaks

So I've just figured out the whole Friends/Fans/Foes/Freaks thing - this after reading Slashdot for God knows how long.

And, apparently, I've picked up some Freaks!

agrounds (227704) was a guy who viewed (views?) Shadowbane in a negative light, and apparently didn't take kindly to my (ahem) somewhat inflametory rebuttles. Oh, and I'm 50% of his Foes list. The other guy (A Proud American (657806)) looks like a troll, so I guess I was a little too forceful ;)
