Comment Re:Thank goodness (Score 4, Interesting) 870

I'm a huge fan and proponent of robotic exploration of the solar system. NASA, JPL, the aerospace contractors and their partners in universities across the world have done an amazing job with comparitively tiny sums of money. Alan Stern (the head of NASA's Space Science Directorate who resigned when his plan to make visible the pain caused by the massive cost over-runs on MSL by shutting down the Spirit MER rover was overruled by higher-ups) has recently pointed out that routine cost overruns are crippling NASA. Ares and Orion show every sign of following this trend, and for what? To keep alive the fallacious dream that seems rather too popular that Star Trek is a plan for future space exploration, rather than an entirely traditional drama turned to SF by the addition of magic impulse drive / dilithium crystal devices. When we've done a robotic Mars sample return, which although fiendishly hard to accomplish is infinitely more practical than doing a manned mission), let's talk about Moonbase Alpha or whatever. (And whilst we're at it, for god's sake abandon the ISS, the most expensive white elephant ever to wreck astronomical observations.)

  1. there is no way the shuttle could retrieve an astronaut who "floated away". Hence, no drill.
  2. For the same reasons that they can't intercept you putative astronaut marshmallow, they also can't intercept the toolbag.

The nature of those reasons are left as an exercise for Dr _Banzai. (Hints: delta-v, ranging.)

i totally suck, too, which is why I have to reply to my own post -- I failed to link to No2ID.org and recommend interested UK types to tip them a tenner if they can afford it. Oh well, having failed to do so the first time, I may as well get ORG in the frame too.

Well, with this and Nov 4th and some hope for proper action on climate change and all... I'm starting to wonder about paying my subs to the Total Fucking Cynic Club this year. Perhaps if Obama doesn't get shot or co-opted I'll start to believe it...

Man, I love it when a plan comes together :D

I've got a No2ID car sticker in my rear window - I drive a g6 Celica so it's out of sight in my rear-view mirror and I always forget it's there, which makes for much hilarity when people start flashing their lights at me after I've overtaken. Once a carload of wasted student-types pulled alongside me as I cruised down the M40 in the low 90s, gurning and grinning and giving me thumbs-up signs... it took me quite a while to work out it was the sticker.

davidmwilliams writes: "Microsoft followed their annual major Tech-Ed event in Australia with a week-long programming contest called "DevSta," to find "star developers." While the quantity and quality of submissions suggest a poor turnout it certainly caught the attention of at least two hackers who left their mark. Here is the low down on the contest, what happened, by who, and screen shots for posterity in case it's been fixed by the time you read this."

Submission + - Barclaycard's website malfunctions for second week (computerworlduk.com)

Jim writes: "Barclaycard's website malfunctioned for most of last week, its second outage in a fortnight, leaving its customers unable to login and access their accounts. Angry Barclaycard customers have contacted Computerworld UK, some saying they cannot carry out basic tasks on the site and others unable to see their financial information at all. It is understood that the migration of 1.7 million Goldfish customers onto Barclaycard's services, after the bank purchased the credit card business in February, is part of the problem. Barclaycard is said to be experiencing significantly higher volumes of customers each day trying to access their accounts online."
