Comment GTV on PS3? (Score 3, Insightful) 198

So does this mean we'll be seeing GTV coming to PS3? No, of course not, SONY will want to sell us another set top box for extra $$$ and we'll want to work extra hard to pay for it too!

Permanent Undersea Homes Soon; Temporary Ones Now 122

MMBK writes "Dennis Chamberland is one of the world's preeminent aquanauts. He's worked with NASA to develop living habitats and underwater plant growth labs, among other cool things. His next goal is establishing the world's first permanent underwater colony. This video gets to the heart of his project, literally and figuratively, as most is shot in his underwater habitat, Atlantica, off the coast of Key Largo, FL. The coolest part might be the moon pool, the room you swim into underwater."

Comment Nano materials risks? (Score 1) 293

I have a genuine concern about the influx of all these consumer grade products which contain Nano materials (as we all should). I get the distinct impression that corporations are putting the benefits of these materials way ahead of the potential health risks (surprised?). Just off the top of my head...Apple's iPhone has a coating comprised of nano materials, many skin creams and make up now contain nano particles, etc. Where are the real studies that show there are no risks in using these materials directly with your skin and body? How can there be any credible tests that show long term results? The sad thing is that 99.9% of the people don't know or care about this. I fear that these materials will be the Asbestos of the 21st century that people of the future will look back on and shake their heads. Can any Slashdotters provide some good feedback or linkage on this matter? Appreciate any feedback.

Comment Mac keyboard firmware security issue (keylogger (Score 1) 132

I recall reading this (URL:http://www.semiaccurate.com/2009/07/31/apple-keyboard-firmware-hack-demonstrated/) last year but never heard any follow up from Apple. Does anyone know if there was actually any firmware release for this to close this potential security hole? It appears the likelihood of this getting exploited is rather small (requiring local access at this time) but it still warrants a response from Apple IMO.

PS3 Hacked? 296

Several readers have sent word that George Hotz (a.k.a. geohot), the hacker best known for unlocking Apple's iPhone, says he has now hacked the PlayStation 3. From his blog post: "I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I've also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip. 3 years, 2 months, 11 days...that's a pretty secure system. ... As far as the exploit goes, I'm not revealing it yet. The theory isn't really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can't post dumps. I'm hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone's KBAG."

NASA Prepping Plans For Flexible Path To Mars 175

FleaPlus writes "A group at NASA has been formulating a 'Flexible Path' to Mars architecture, which many expect will be part of the soon-to-be-announced reboot of NASA's future plans. NASA's prior architecture spends much of its budget on creating two in-house rockets, the Ares I and V, and would yield no beyond-LEO human activity until a lunar landing sometime in the 2030s. In contrast, the Flexible Path would produce results sooner, using NASA's limited budget to develop and gain experience with the technologies (human and robotic) needed to progressively explore and establish waypoints at Lagrange points, near-Earth asteroids, the Martian moon Phobos, Mars, and other possible locations (e.g. the Moon, Venus flyby). Suggested interim goals include constructing giant telescopes in deep space, learning how to protect Earth from asteroids, establishing in-space propellant depots, and harvesting resources/fuel from asteroids and Phobos to supply Moon/Mars-bound vehicles."

Comment WGA was the final straw for me (Score 3, Interesting) 256

I have to say that WGA was really the final straw for me with Microsoft. I, being a paying customer, felt from day 1 of WGA that it was an absolute kick in the teeth from Microsoft. It is what turned me from a Microsoft fan over to using my Mac Mini. It was a sad thing for me but I'm much happier now and will never come back. Thanks for turning me away Microsoft!
