This. The second I saw that redesign, and the immediate response by Rose et.al, I knew it was over. I really enjoyed Digg, but man they screwed the pooch on that redesign. I recall Rose's "contemporaries" (Rojas/Topolsky) defending it at first, then everyone kind of just quietly tip toed away as they saw the disaster that the Digg team had put together.

BTW..The only reason I use reddit is because I can use an app to peruse the content without the HORRID site interface. And by horrid I mean fucking terrible.

Didn't he already suggest perhaps a penny per trade fee or half a penny, something like that as a way to curb HFT? In any case, either a money or time constraint added to the mix would probably put an end to it as it is today. But that would never happen because too many people make way too much money on this scam.

This. I think T-Mobile did offer a break on a bring your own plan at one point, but none of the other carriers offer any discount for not using the subsidy. Also, are these "nexus" devices going to be cdma/gsm/evdo/hsdpa+/LTE + 8 Band units? No? What is the benefit of buying one exactly? I still can't switch carriers at will, I would only be able to switch between gsm carriers (Att/tmob) OR cdma carriers(vzw/sprint), and either VZW or Sprint could easily say no to them. It doesn't make much sense to do this unless you can buy a device with the right combo of tech/bands that will allow you to go to some shitty carrier like metro/cricket or a terrible prepaid plan on a big carrier, where the plans are cheap. If you want/need better service, ATT/VZW are your only two "real" options( Tmob/Sprint to a lesser extent), and you'd be losing money buying this type of device and not taking the subsidy.

You forgot perhaps the most important piece of the puzzle. The parents MUST be engaged in the education of their children. My local school districts provide unbelievable resources to students and bend to every shithead parent saying their kid shouldn't be graded or can't be called on in class because it damages their fragile psyche (absolutely true story btw). But if parents are involved the right way, there is almost no limit to what little Suzy or Bobby can accomplish in public schools. And while I am personally not a fan of unions in general, I can see the benefit they do provide in the school system. They protect teachers, good and bad, from the flippant child falsely accusing them of harassing them or making inappropriate comments and also lunatic parents who raised garbage kids and want to take out their frustration on someone. It's not a perfect situation, but it mostly works.*

*This is the situation local to me, I know there are many underfunded districts where resources are much more scarce. And parents are also much less involved or put a lot less of an emphasis on education.

This. Precisely what they did when they bought Cingular. Att is generally ok, except where they fucking suck. Which is pretty much customer service, phone selection/crippling, and definitely their fucking data price gouging. Assholes. That being said, I cannot fathom going to CDMA of either flavor (Sprint/VZW). So I am stuck. I was hoping T-mobile would have gotten their shit together and actually competed, but no, ATT has found a way to fuck everyone again. Hopefully Verizon's LTE roll out cranks up and I can say good bye to those fucking asshole jackasses at ATT forever.

Skill at gaming might actually be equal, but the interface is not. I believe someone from MS said at one time they had Xbox and PC FPS shooters(i forget the game) sharing servers and found that PC gamers always smoked the console gamers. KB/M > gamepad for FPS or RPG or RTS with hotkeys/macros/accuracy via mouse vs toggling a stick to move your reticle around and limited buttons. I thought this was common knowledge..

Comment Depends on the bank (Score 1) 511

I have been pretty lucky with the banks I use. Years ago, I suddenly had some transactions from Ireland show up on my card. I went to a local branch and talked to someone. I simply filled out a form, they gave me a new card and refunded the money right there. More recently, I went on vacation and made one transaction with my debit card. About an 30 minutes later I got a call from a strange number, so I let it go to VM. The next time I tried to use the card it was declined. Annoyed I listened to my Vm and it was the bank (TD bank) asking me to call them back. I did and they asked me to confirm the area I was at and what my recent transactions were, once I confirmed them, they reactivated the card. Actually pretty nice of them.
