Comment Re:Why are Libs so enamored with taxes? (Score 1) 623

Liberals fail to realize the degree to which government wastes money. This is especially true in California. We have 100K a year prison guards and lifeguards. In just a few years there will be 10,000 retired state employees making over 100k a year in pensions, indexed for inflation, with lifetime medical benefits. And that number will continue to grow. Why should the "rest of us" be on the hook for this?

Colossal waste of money. On so many decisions it seems like our president is taking advice from George Castanza and always doing the opposite of what makes good sense. With only a few exceptions all of the current Amtrak routes are money losers. Every ticket purchased on Amtrak from Los Angeles to New Orleans is subsidized by the taxpayer for over $400.

Sharks Seen Swimming Down Australian Streets 210

As if the flood waters weren't bad enough for the people of Queensland, it now appears that there are sharks swimming in the streets. Two bull sharks were spotted swimming past a McDonald’s in the city of Goodna, Butcher Steve Bateman saw another making its way past his shop on Williams street. Ipswich councillor for the Goodna region Paul Tully said: "It would have swam several kilometres in from the river, across Evan Marginson Park and the motorway. It’s definitely a first for Goodna, to have a shark in the main street."

I applaud taxpayers not paying for the cell service of these individuals. But why make them give back the phones? They are worth far more to the current phone holders as individuals than they would be to the state. Let them keep the phones and use them to signup for their own plans. Good timing for Verizon though now that they are offering the iphone.

Survey Shows That Fox News Makes You Less Informed 1352

A survey of American voters by World Public Opinion shows that Fox News viewers are significantly more misinformed than consumers of news from other sources. One of the most interesting questions was about President Obama's birthplace. 63 percent of Fox viewers believe Obama was not born in the US (or that it is unclear). In 2003 a similar study about the Iraq war showed that Fox viewers were once again less knowledgeable on the subject than average. Let the flame war begin!

I have no problem with leaking evidence of government waste or corporate wrongdoing. But when this guy leaks evidence that the Yemen military has been secretly bombing terrorists and with our permission having our military take the blame to keep their populace calm then I have a huge problem with that.

Chip Allows Blind People To See 231

crabel writes "3 blind people have been implanted with a retinal chip that allowed them to see shapes and objects within days of the procedure. From the article: 'One of the patients surprised researchers by identifying and locating objects on a table; he was also able to walk around a room unaided, approach specific people, tell the time from a clock face, and describe seven different shades of gray in front of him.'"

The solution is that the "independents" need to pick a party and join it. Too many Democrats and Republicans have left their parties out of frustration. But all they have done is taken away their own right to participate in the primaries in choosing who ends up on the ballot on election day. By leaving the Republicans have skewed farther to the right and the Democrats skewed farther to the left.

"Argonaut" Octopus Sucks Air Into Shell As Ballast 72

audiovideodisco writes "Even among octopuses, the Argonaut must be one of the coolest. It gets its nickname — 'paper nautilus' — from the fragile shell the female assembles around herself after mating with the tiny male (whose tentacle/penis breaks off and remains in the female). For millennia, people have wondered what the shell was for; Aristotle thought the octopus used it as a boat and its tentacles as oars and sails. Now scientists who managed to study Argonauts in the wild confirm a different hypothesis: that the octopus sucks air into its shell and uses it for ballast as it weaves its way through the ocean like a tiny submarine. The researchers' beautiful video and photographs show just how the Argonaut pulls off this trick. The regular (non-paper) nautilus also uses its shell for ballast, but the distant relationship between it and all octopuses suggests this is a case of convergent evolution."
