Comment Best way to upgrade? (or Videolan's website sucks) (Score 2, Interesting) 419

Checking for updates from VLC 0.9.9 reports that I have the latest version. I figured I'd visit Videolan's site and see what the release notes said about upgrading, but I can't find any release notes. So I tried checking the FAQ, wiki, and forums. The FAQ doesn't cover upgrading from 0.9.9 to 1.0.0, and the wiki and forum links just seem to return you to the VLC main page. I'm downloading 1.0.0 now. I'll probably end up uninstalling 0.9.9 and installing 1.0.0, but it sure would be nice if the "check for updates" functionality worked. And it would be nice if the wiki and forums worked, too.

CAPS LOCK is handy for typing things such as CTRL[1]. It's also very handy when working in CAD, where all-caps is usually expected.

The delete key on the (Apple) keyboard in front of me is already nearly as big as the enter key; does it really need to be bigger? And while I do use the escape key with some frequency, I don't have any problems with missing it or hitting adjacent keys, so why does it need to be bigger?

Finally, I thought I'd comment directly to the PC Authority article. It says you need to login or register to comment, so I registered and logged in. The top bar on the site said I was logged in, but below the article it continued to tell me to login or register in order to comment. I just wanted to share my annoyance with that.

Comment I don't think it'll be a big deal, but I want 4:3 (Score 1) 668

I haven't worked with a widescreen monitor yet, but I certainly don't want to step down from my current 1600 pixel vertical resolution. That means when I replace my current monitor I'll have to go from a 20" display to a 24" or larger one.

CAD is my business, and I just can't see any advantage to going wider in CAD. A 1:1 ratio would probably be best for a CAD display.

Anyway, I don't think the switch to widescreen will be too painful, but I'd rather stick with 4:3.

Why Is US Grad School Mainly Non-US Students? 1131

I am a new graduate student in Computer Engineering. I would like to get my MS and possibly my Ph.D. I have learned that 90% of my department is from India and many others are from China. All the students come here to study and there are only 7 US citizens in the engineering program this year. Why is that? I have heard that many of the smarter Americans go into medicine or the law and that is why there are so few Americans in engineering. Is this true?

FBI Targets Online Auction Sites' Criminal Element 57

coondoggie writes "The FBI has made a number of big busts using the eBay and other online auction sites this year. Today comes news that it played a big role in the indictment of an Alabama man for wire fraud. Joseph Davidson, has been charged in U.S. District Court with wire fraud in connection with an eBay scheme in which he allegedly received approximately $77,000 for stolen goods sold on the auction site. "Online auction houses present an opportunity for a thief to turn a stolen item into cash. Thieves should know that law enforcement can surf sites too in investigating crime," the FBI said."

Diebold Sues Massachusetts for "Wrongful Purchase" 422

elBart0 writes "Diebold has decided to sue the commonwealth of Massachusetts for choosing a competitor to provide voting machines for the disabled. Diebold wants to force the state to stop using the machines immediately, despite the upcoming municipal elections in many towns. The commonwealth chose the competitor based on an open process that included disabled groups. Diebold executives appeared confused when encountering election officials who made an intelligent choice."

Submission + - Podcast interview with Richard Stallman

AlanS2002 writes: "Nearthwort Obtain currently has a podcast interview with Richard Stallman on it's site. In the interview Richard answers some questions which seem to be the standard for Stallman interviews. Beyond this Stallman talks about why Linus Torvalds is not such a righteous dude and how Apple is as evil as Microsoft. Also discussed is the ease of use of F/OSS software as compared to proprietary software (such as Windows or OS X), the compatibility of F/OSS with market capitalism, the current status of human freedom and the reasons for Stallman's passion for the Free Software movement."

bcrowell writes: "Nature is reporting on e-mails leaked from the Association of American Publishers, which considers itself "under siege" because of NIH and congressional efforts to get all NIH-funded scientific papers posted for free on PubMed Central. The AAP has hired a PR firm, which is advising them to spread the message that "Public access equals government censorship," and that traditional for-profit print publishing is the same thing as peer peer review."

Submission + - Dance Copyright enforced by DMCA

goombah99 writes: The "creator" of the Dance move known as the electric slide has filed a DMCA based takedown notice for videos he deems to infringe and because they show "bad dancing". He is also seeking compensation from the use of the dance move at a wedding celebration shown on the Ellen Degeneres Show. Next up, the Funky Chicken, the moonwalk, and the Hustle? More seriously, does the DMCA have any limit on it's scope?

Submission + - KoffeePhoto version 2 includes Web Space and pictu

Carl Conrad writes: "Strasbourg, France — January 15, 2007 — KoffeeWare, a company dedicated to peer-to-peer groupware solutions, unveils KoffeePhoto version 2, free photo sharing software. Featuring an integrated peer-to-peer secure backup system and pictures available on PC (Windows or Linux), Mac (Mac OS X) as well as on converging PDAs, this new version of KoffeePhoto is a major step towards the converging version of the software. KoffeePhoto version 2 is a major breakthrough as it extends the user experience to new means of accessing their pictures and the pictures shared by friends while reducing the need for a third party photo editing software.

As a reminder, the KoffeePhoto software provides a straightforward means of storing and sharing personal digital picture libraries. Thanks to its peer-to-peer distributed storage model, storage is virtually unlimited and, more than anything else, is completely free.

The new release includes:

        * A free Web Space fully synchronized with the pictures stored in the KoffeePhoto albums. Each KoffeePhoto user automatically benefits from this web space making sharing of pictures easier than ever. Of course, access to high resolution pictures and automated slide-shows remain available using the KoffeePhoto software and can be run at the click of a button from the web space. Thanks to specifically optimized templates, these pages may also be browsed on small displays such as found on PDAs.
        * RSS feed based access to albums for easy picture posting on personal blogs include dynamic update of the pictures displayed. Display of album preview can be easily integrated into web site for simplified linking to the KoffeePhoto Web Space.
        * Newly included photo editing functions include contrast and brightness balance, color management, change to black and white or sepia... These photo editing functions will be rapidly extended thanks to a straightforward plug-in architecture. Of course, photo editing is safe with preview and undo capabilities.
        * Simplified contact management eases photo sharing with friends and relatives.

These new features extend the previous feature-set and define a new level of user experience. With inclusion of these features, KoffeePhoto is a unique software taking care of all tasks related to personal photo management, from the camera to sharing and to the printing service, no additional software is required.

"We are convinced that KoffeePhoto has now reached a mature functional level," states Gilles Pommereuil, CTO of KoffeeWare, editor of KoffeePhoto "and provides new means of accessing personal digital picture libraries giving a new and deeper meaning to the promise of an universal access to one's personal digital picture library.".

"We are proud of the confidence of our growing community of printing partners," adds Carl Conrad, Marketing and Communications Manager of KoffeeWare, editor of KoffeePhoto "and are confident that this new level of functionality will help them providing their customers with a better experience as well as bringing new customers to their service.".
