Apple is dropping MacOS's support for PPC later this year, but you can still get Safari 4 for PPC today. Microsoft never even made Silverlight 2 for PPC.
And it's not that I mind; I've never encountered a site requiring Silverlight in my daily surfing, and if I did I'd just go somewhere else instead of reaching for my MacBook Pro, I'm just saying that Flash beats Silverlight when it comes to platform support.

The Mac version of Silverlight only works on Intel Macs, where Flash works on both PPC and Intel.
Duke Nukem For Never 565

They cite 'a reliable source close to the company,' who said the developer is finished and employees have already been let go. It looks like all of the Duke Nukem Forever jokes are turning into reality; DNF might turn out to be the ultimate vaporware after all."
3D Realms' webmaster, Joe Siegler, confirmed the closing, saying that he didn't know about it even a day beforehand. Apogee and Deep Silver, who are working on a different set of Duke Nukem games (referred to as the Duke Nukem Trilogy) say they are not affected by the problems at 3D Realms.

Transitions between versions of OS X aren't as drastic, or as prone to breaking things as going from XP to Vista*. On the other hand, during the transition from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X you could still get OS 9 for more than a year after OS X left beta.

An anonymous reader writes: The UK government website has a petition calling for the source code for government projects to be released under a Free licence. It seems to me that the tax payer should have a right to use the source code they have paid to have developed (except for certain military projects). Shouldn't the citizens also have a right to audit the security of database systems which store their personal information? Does the Slashdot community think that open sourcing government projects will help reduce costs by promoting the use of existing Free projects as the basis for new systems?

If confirmed this has applications in neurology, psychology, child-rearing, and a host of other domains. From the BBC piece: 'Using brain scans, the US investigators found this region related to a person's real-life unselfish behaviour. The Duke University Medical Center study on 45 volunteers is published in Nature Neuroscience. The participants were asked to disclose how often they engaged in different helping behaviours, such as doing charity work, and were also asked to play a computer game designed to measure altruism.'"

Volume Unique Keys and Title keys for other discs followed within hours, confirming that software HD-DVD players, like any common program, store important run-time data in memory. UN Official Says UN Not Taking Over Internet 104
kaufmanmoore writes "Hamadoun Toure, the new head of the UN's International Telecommunications Union says that he does not plan to take over governance of the internet and leave it up to groups like ICANN. In his statement he says that the ITU will instead focus on bridging the digital divide, internet security and standardize broadband communications. When asked about Chinese censorship Toure said that issue is beyond the mandate of the ITU."

He also seems to feel that Direct X 10 is more of a gimmick than anything. "They're artificially doing that by tying DX10 [DirectX 10] so close it, which is really nothing about the OS.
