...of these insipid "real work" claims about the requirement for a file browser to do said "work" is sounding more and more like the tech boors who pretended DOS was more efficient than the GUI, and that GUIs made computers "toys". It was ridiculous then, it's new counterpart is ridiculous now. Even moreso in the next few years.

Who looks at a market where an incumbent is decimating the competition and thinks "this is the perfect point for us to throw our hat in the ring"? Has anyone driven a truck thru these gaping holes? Anyone? Beuller? When OSX is suffering from a deluge of viruses from all these supposed gaping holes in it's Architecture, please come back and let us know. Because while every operating system has vulnerabilities, only Microsoft was kind enough to make those vulnerabilities accessible by system wide scripting mechanisms that allowed millions of computer users the world over be the subject of attacks from the hundreds of thousands of pieces of malware constantly fighting to infect Windows PCs. The count (for those who think a security vulnerability makes Apple's points about viruses invalid) is about one hundred thousand to 0. This is being very generous. So, yes, as a matter of fact, there are no viruses for Mac OS X. Not virtually none, not almost none. None.

Few thousand lives? Who cares? US roads (just US roads) kill almost 40 thousand people a year. 39800 in 2008 alone. Do you know how many Denver pantsbomber flights that is? 143. One hundred and forty three jets would have to be destroyed with all hands every year to equal the death toll on the US roads. Yet where is the panic, the regulations, the outraged calls for action? We are afraid of exactly the wrong things. Since 1999 there have been 6 attempted terrorist attacks concerning US or US bound aircraft with 4 successes. The number of people lost is completely irrelevant in light of the tens of thousands that die yearly in the mundane crap nobody seems to care about. The billions wasted on ever more ridiculous regulations screwing up the lives of air travelers amounts to exactly that: a waste.
