Journal Journal: The words you use are important 6

Some labels apply to people, you know, human beings?

When we overload them with negative meanings, we dilute their meaning and risk misrepresenting real people who might need understanding.

The term "gay" is not the same as bad.

The term "retarded" doesn't mean foolish or stupid.

It isn't a pro-level tool by any stretch yet (five days of intraday data isn't much), but the way it automatically tracks what you've been doing (go back to the home page after searching for some stocks and see how it changes) is quite useful. And Google searches to find stock tickers - clearly it's tuned for that. E.g., "ms" gets you Morgan Stanley, not multiple sclerosis. Though doing a search for "ms" on Google's main page, Google Finance comes up at the top of the list.

Vista May Put Anti-Spyware Companies Out 392

Ant wrote to mention a C|Net article with an interesting premise: Windows Vista's tough approach to spyware may put anti-spyware companies out of business. From the article: "While this may be good news for buyers of Vista, it is not for anyone who makes a living from selling anti-spyware software. The worldwide market has boomed recently, reaching $97 million in revenue in 2004, up 240.4 percent from a year earlier, according to IDC. However, companies such as Webroot Software and Sunbelt Software are in for tough times, analysts said."

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Coming Soon to PCs 209

An anonymous reader writes "A Yahoo! news piece has some sales details for the upcoming Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players. They also have some details on disc drives that read the new formats." From the article: "Sony has priced its first desktop computer that will have a Blu-ray Disc burner. The drive will be able to write to 25GB and 50GB BD-RE (rewritable) and BD-R (write once) discs. Sony will start selling 25GB BD-RE and BD-R discs in April for $20 and $25 respectively and 50GB capacity versions of the same discs later in the year for $48 and $60 respectively. The Vaio RC will be launched in 'early summer' and will cost around $2300. At the CeBIT show in Germany last week, Sony announced plans for a Vaio notebook with a Blu-ray Disc drive."

Green Geek Beer 195

DigiDave writes "A time honored tradition on St Patty's Day is to drink green beer. But some breweries go out of their way to make sure that the brewskies we drink are always green, by using environmentally friendly brewing methods. The makers of Fat Tire, for example, use a cogeneration process that involves anaerobic bacteria turning wastewater into methane gas for power."

Journal Journal: Equilibrium: The Rejected Review

Touted both here and in CHUD as a good film, The Matrix with less wire-work and a more believable plot, an entertaining riff on classics like 1984, Brave New World, and Fahrenheit 451, I went into the theater expecting to like it. Alas, I came out disappointed. Visually, it is stunning and well-done, showing that you don't need Bullet Time(TM) to do an entertaining action sequence.
