Comment "There is no evidence" (Score 1) 149

The Agriculture Department and the C.D.C. emphasized that "there is no evidence that pets play a role in spreading the virus in the United States." Other experts agree that people should not start looking at their cats with suspicion.

Gee that sounds familiar...

"No evidence of human to human transmission."

"Closing your borders is racist."

"Hug a Chinese tourist."

I think I'll stick to the precautionary principle, thanks.

It's pretty obvious that the only thing keeping Mozilla afloat is Google's money, which Google is happy to pay. Propping up something resembling "competition" helps Google deflect some amount of anti-trust attention. It's even better when the competition Google is funding is on a trajectory to alienate ALL of its users (though if Firefox actually dips under 2% of market share that might be so low that they no longer provide Google with meaningful cover).

What a shitshow.

Did you stock up on hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and toilet paper back then? No? Then you were just as complacent about this as the national governments throughout the world.

This is the most idiotic "thought" I've seen posted on /. in a very, very long time, and I browse at -1.

And even then, most people were expecting this would be like SARS, where it died off because people weren't contagious until they were symptomatic.

Ah, now I understand why you think the lack of response was justified. You've apparently never heard of the precautionary principle. The optimal way to avoid risk is to assume that something is dangerous until proven safe. Just because a long-incubating, highly contagious virus is unknown in recent memory, that's not a justification for responding to a novel outbreak as though it couldn't possibly present a new threat.

World leaders should be familiar with the precautionary principle. A 12 year old who has played Pandemic / Plauge Inc would have seen the inadequacy of the containment strategy of national governments. You don't have to be a member of the epidemiology community to have seen the risk. Jesus Christ.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that anyone entering the country from abroad —Israeli citizens and foreign nationals alike — must self-quarantine for 14 days.

Those foreign nationals who are unable to demonstrate to Israeli border authorities that they will be able to self-quarantine for two weeks will not be allowed to enter the country.

"This is a difficult decision, but it is necessary to protect public health — and the public health comes before everything," Netanyahu said in a video statement on Monday.
