Comment Why four decimal places? (Score 2) 159

Until 2001, stocks traded in 1/16 dollar units, which requires four decimal places to represent accurately. Originally this was 1/8 dollar units (pieces of eight), but it changed to 1/16 in 1997 as a precursor to decimalization. Changing the number of decimal places to two isn't as easy as it sounds given that there is a huge amount of historical data stored in the old format.

We do something similar during work hours on Fridays. The bosses are invited (one is new, so he was just added) and sometimes show up. The rest of us show up when we want. It's reasonably fun and helps make up for not seeing the rest. And it's also called the "virtual water cooler".

The boss has run two special events - one was a virtual launch party where he ordered pizza delivery for each of us. (Did you know that if you order 15 pizzas from Dominoes for delivery to different locations that it looks suspicious? He ended up having to re-order all of them.) The second was a delivery of a food kit that we each cooked ourselves while on Zoom. Both of these worked really well.
