The fuselage in question was built by Spirit Aerospace. A quick look at their hiring page exposes that they care more about diversity, equity, and inclusion than than merit. You can either maximize for merit, or maximize for diversity. You cannot simultaneously maximize for both merit and diversity. Let's face the reality:
diversity in the DEI sense just means anything except white and east Asian men. On Spirit's DEI website (linked below), they boast about how they value "a full range of differences".
Here is quote from their website:
"Spirit is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive. We believe that embracing diversity in all its forms is key to driving innovation and achieving success. Join us in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in the aerospace industry. Spirit values the full range of differences, perspectives and abilities that our employees bring to the workplace. We strive to create an environment where all employees feel welcomed and a sense of belonging. Cultivating a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion directly aligns with our values and is a key enabler to achieving our overall business strategy to enhance performance."
What differences are they referring to exactly? What about those differences makes them valued? Do those differences actually result in higher quality lower cost products? Are they assuming that all cultural differences equally good? Do they realize that differences can actually create problems (example: language barriers, confusion that stems from that, disagreement, disunity, dysfunction, etc) Based on their website graphics, it appears that differences they're referring to are at least biological; skin, eye, and hair color -- all characteristics associated with race. The main photo on their DEI page features exactly 10 darker skinned young women wearing hijabs, 4 darker skinned men, 1 east Asian man, and 1 east Asian woman. Notably missing is a single caucasian male even though they make up a huge percentage of the general population. Why not just hire the most qualified individuals regardless of immutable characteristics like race and sex? Spirit Aerospace's hiring page reeks of antiwhitism as well as discrimination against white men. Did they choose to hire less competent less experienced people solely based on race (i.e. preference toward non-whites) and gender (i.e. preference toward women)? If so, could one or more of their diversity hires have forgotten to install the bolts and locking pins that were missing on the panel that flew off that Boeing 737 MAX aircraft? I doubt we will ever find out, but if they are rejecting meritocracy in favor of DEI, it certainly begs the question! Any airline that engages in diversity hiring is probably sacrificing safety on the altar of DEI.
