Journal Journal: good and bad

Was reading the post and came across a few stories about how critical the iraqi were of the loss of infrastructure because of the war and later, the looting.

Quite a few comments I've seen on slashdot express their criticism at Fox News, saying it nothing but a slavish cheerleader of the Pentagon. But where do we draw the line? When things were going bad in the war, the US lost 10 soldiers, the sandstorm brought the attack to a crawl.. we were starved for good news. Would you criticize Fox News coverage then for being optimistic and others for their doomsday theories?

I have wholeheartedly supported the war on Iraq. I also support Bush on all but 2 areas. He is quite wrong about the economy and he is not at all bothered about the environment-US or worldwide. In this area too, the question pops up-

Should I agree with Bush all the way or should I disagree with him when I feel he is wrong?

There is simply no way I would have sided with the anti-war fanatics who had a stronger voice on the web and the slashdot comments. I have the satisfaction of being on the side who got their wishes fulfilled-Saddam gone. But now the question that pops up is what is the US doing to bring out the oil and help pay for the reconstruction? People in Iraq are getting frustrated. IMO as soon as the war was over, the US should have sent in some 70-90,000 additional troops to prevent this widescale looting. Rumsfeld was right about the less number of troops sent into combat but I'm not sure if the troops there now are enough to keep law and order.

Hopefully, the US will begin the reconstruction in earnest and avoid antagonizing more the iraqi population.

If you have some thoughts on this subject, share them.

Journal Journal: music

read the article on apple music. Nice system, wish it would just be plain simple mp3's. Dont care much about quality as long as its 128 bit rate and about .75 $ per song.

Saw a lot of comments about how people would rather download from kazaa and such because they would rather not pay for apple. Havent they heard of irc??

IRC in my opinion is the best file sharing facility of all. Beats the pants out of kazaa, grokster, gnutella etc. Most of the material in kazaa is shit in the first place.. why do people suffer using kazaa when there are better options. Go to where the source is !

For about 2 years when I started using the net, I wondered what irc was but never bothered enough to find out. Now I've been using irc regularly since Sep 2001.

Journal Journal: city poll

a year or so back, I was seeing a show on mtv where college students travel from town to town or something..
they were passing thru a town called mianus(my-anus). The mtv anchor cracked a few jokes with one of the town's residents. He asked her.. so if you want to go to Mcdonalds.. you go the centre of mianus? if you want to head so and so.. you have to go up mianus.. . It was hilarious to say the least.

and how do you spell canada

C, eh?
N, eh?
D, eh?

Journal Journal: some observations made while installing xp

I recently upgraded my motherboard and AGP card.

Earlier I had a mobo with integrated graphics and therefore did not need a AGP card. Went and bought a GeforceMX400(original Nvidia- a dell pull for 30 $). Little did i know that this mobo had a ISA slot instead of AGP.

So went back to the comp shop and got a new mobo. Came home and the xp kept freezing up 10 min after I used it. Really frustrating.

2 days I tried to figure out what the problem was. Went back to the comp shop and checked the cpu(fine), agp card(fine) so the mobo was faulty. The computer guy didnt agree and I had to show him some 5 times that xp was freezing even after using a diff agp card.

I also changed my heatsink(was rated for 750 or 800 Mhz and I have 850 Athlon) with one that is good till 1.7 Athlon. Also returned 3 mice and got a new logitech optical USB. nice. Finally on Sat evening, the comp was working fine with a new mobo.

I used win 98 se for a few months here before upgrading to xp. I did not do a clean install and just chose the upgrade option. Probably not a good idea.

1)I installed IE 6.x in win 98se. The bug in this was that whenever I clicked on a link to open on a new page, the new page would turn out to be blank.(Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 281679
). I searched for a solution high and low for 4 days before somebody in IRC pointed out the MS knowledge base article.

I finally did a clean install of xp with the new mobo. Now xp works like a charm.

The boot time is shorter by some 5-8 sec compared to my old mobo. Not sure if the clean install of xp is also responsible for this.

When xp was installed over 98, there was a problem with hibernate mode. When I selected hibernate mode and the put the comp to hibernation, then when I restarted the comp, it would log in to my account automatically. It would not show the login screen. It was irritating.

When I used netscape to view photos, saving them would take atleast 5 sec even after I downloaded them in win 98/win98-xp upgrade.
Now after the clean install of xp, it takes .5 sec to save the photos.

About the USB mouse, its got a ps/2 connector too. I removed the ps/2 connector and plugged the mouse in the USB port. xp would just hang. After a clean install of xp, USB works just fine.

One bad option in the new install of xp is Java. Since java is not loaded in IE, I had to d/l it seperately. And yahoo pool does'nt come up as good as it used to in 98. Just have to bear with it. Don't play it as much these days as I used to earlier.

Journal Journal: gaming

Yesterday we cried because games and game studios fail. Today we rejoice because an up-coming game has been leaked. We want to have our cake and eat it too. This mentality is a good part of the reason our types aren't taken seriously. slashdot

That is an interesting comment. anybody willing to debate that?
