Submission + - Starlink's Dishy McFlatface can't stand the heat (arstechnica.com) 1

tlhIngan writes: A small warning to those considering Starlink in locations that might get hot — apparently Dishy McFlatface (the satellite dish) will go into thermal shutdown if it reaches an internal temperature of 122F (50C) which will disconnect from the service until it cools down to 104F (40C). An Arizona man lost service for about 7 hours while the dish overheated. He cooled it down with a sprinkler and it started working again, only to shut down when it overheated again. Software fixes are planned to help reduce heat generation.

With firefox on a Mac, on first try, it detected 18 apps (I only have 3 of them installed).
On the second try, it found only 3 apps (I only have 2 of those installed).
On the third try, it found 23 apps (of which I only have 3 installed).

So, on the same machine, with the same browser, it claims I have 3 unique identifiers.

It depends, you can probably get 2 servers at OVH at 2 different DCs (SBG and Montreal) for the same price as one at some other places. Of course, you have to sync both and have disaster planning and that's a lot of administration overhead. But in the end, it might even be more reliable than 1 server at a more expensive provider.

If you read the articles in french, it seems they have been arrested with handcuffs and all and put into some mild form of detention. But I guess people connected to their wifi have done 'bad' things and that's why they have been targeted. Also, french providers are able to give you an access point made for sharing which logs everything according to the law, but this is more expensive.

Comment In Germany, this means more pollution. (Score 1) 173

The idea itself is good, as long as electricity is produced in a clean way. In Germany, they seem to power off their nuclear plants and use non clean (CO2 wise) sources instead.
In 2019, a study by the IFO in Munich found that electric vehicles in Germany emit 11 percent to 28 percent more carbon dioxide than their diesel counterparts.
