Submission + - Killer's alleged step-mom writes to Gabe of PA

Shambhu writes: In this Penny Arcade post (scroll down) Gabe displays an email received from someone claiming to be the step-mother of one of the teenage killers of a homeless man that got so much press recently. The letter was in response to Gabe's earlier rant about the media blaming video games for violent crime which included a link to this CNN article. It doesn't make for very pleasant reading, and while I don't know how or when the authenticity will be confirmed, the letter confirms what most people expected: that these kids were not 'normal' in most senses of the term.

Journal Journal: OG Quake Goodies

While on a visit to our friendly neighborhood Value Village thrift store, I saw two NIB Quake related expansions. One was Deathmatch Creator (which said it was the first one approved by Id;-). The other was was Level Creator V for Quake, but did not appear to be endorsed or approved by Id. Each was $9.99.

Submission + - $10 wok keeps TV station on air

Bevan Weir writes: "Why pay $20,000 for a commercial link to run your television station when a $10 kitchen wok is just as effective?. 45 South volunteer Ken Jones designed the wok transmitter in his spare time last year when he wanted to provide wireless broadband to his Ardgowan home."

Skype Asks FCC to Open Cellular Networks 292

Milwaukee's_Best writes "Skype has just asked the FCC to force wireless phone companies to open their networks to all comers. Skype essentially wants to turn the wireless phone companies into just another network of the kind currently operated on the ground. This would require carriers to allow any phone to be used on their networks, and for any application. Users would simply purchase a voice or data plan (though these could easily converge into a data plan if VoIP calling is used) and then use the device of their choice to access the network of their choice. Think of it as network neutrality for cell networks. Given the competition that exists within the industry, is this needed?"

Submission + - Brian Peppers Day Finally Arrives

dafing writes: Wikitruth has a page about Brian Peppers. Peppers became an internet celebrity when a photo of him in court spread through the internet. A background on Brian Peppers can be found here. Can Wikipedia, which aims to be "The sum of all human knowledge" ban creating an article for a year? Is this censorship gone insane?

Submission + - Sun Really Giving Away Niagara Servers

karlnyberg writes: "In Sun to Give Niagara Servers to Reviewers, /. carried an article where Sun was talking about giving Niagara servers away:

"... to bloggers who do a good job reviewing their servers. From [Jonathan Schwartz'] blog article: 'if you write a blog that fairly assesses the machine's performance (positively or negatively), send us a pointer, we're likely to let you keep the machine'"
Well, they're doing just that. If you take a look at Open Performance Contest Winners, you'll see a list of their winners. My interest? Well, they must have liked my assessment and evaluation, because you'll see a link at the top of the page to my winning evaluation."

Submission + - New Go Algorithm May Help Beat Human Players

An anonymous reader writes: The Birmingham Post reports that two Hungarian scientists have now come up with an algorithm that helps computers pick the right move in Go (an ancient Chinese board game that is still popular in Asia). Though computers have beat top players in chess, even the most powerful computer failed to beat top players in Go. The new method uses two processors instead of one. Though 19x19 board is still tough for computers, "On a nine by nine board we are not far from reaching the level of a professional Go player," said Levente Kocsis at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' computing lab SZTAKI.
