Comment Re:plastics the new paper (Score 4, Informative) 398

Canada makes polymer bills. The first polymer bill produced was the $100 CAD. Not too long after it was released, counterfeits were reported. This is a CBC story from May 2013. Too bad, for the longest time $100 and $50 paper bills weren't accepted at retail even if legal tender for fear it was counterfeit. Hopefully this doesn't happen with the new polymer bills.

The premise here is a bit odd. Windows is the obvious #1 platform on PC but the #2 Mac doesn't have a close second to Windows globally. Taking 2nd place here isn't very hard. There aren't even many desktop OSes capable of running modern games now. I also though Linux wasn't a "platform" since it isn't an OS, its the kernel. Anyhow, given the small number of desktop gaming OSes, it won't be hard to be #3 or #4. Unless I'm mistaken. Maybe there are a lot of gamers using DOS, OS/2, Solaris, BSD, BeOS, QNX ....

There's a new (and rather expensive) Sony product: http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/m... that they're saying will be in densities up to 300 GB. From what I've read it looks like a Blu-Ray sized MiniDisc.

I'm not saying these are any better, but there is higher optical densities becoming available. They're targeting high-end video right now in the US markets. I tried to read-up more on this out of curiosity a while back but majority of info in on Sony.jp site site in Japanese. At $6,000 for the drive alone, hopefully there'll be some cheaper alternatives out there. The media prices are much less .. I see one site with a 300 GB disc for $50.

It seems Sony is partnering up with Panasonic. Hopefully something interesting happens with this.

I'd like a backup alternative to DVDs and doesn't seem to be worth the leap to go to Blu-Ray and most tape is too expensive for home use (and/or hard to find).

I used to have a lot of respect for 60. Since Rather was let go, Wallace, Bradley and Rooney passed away, the show just doesn't feel the same. There was definitely more integrity to the show 5 to 10 years ago. I'm not just talking about recent pieces that have taken criticism. The show has access to people and places few other shows have because of the history and reputation. I'm not sure how much longer that will hold up either.

I'm sorry 60 Minutes. You should really be more careful before releasing future pieces. Go back to the standards you had before or you will definitely lose a long time viewer.

I don't work in PCI compliance, but I've been reading up on it. This is, as I've understood it, a violation of PCI. Adding to parent comment, that it was taken "in-flight" is probably as much a rule breaker .... and one has to wonder how if this data was not being stored just how long it was being taken "in-flight". There's several million cards been taken from the news release. This might represent several hours worth of transactions (given the busy time of the year) so if this info was tapped for a few hours this is concerning.

On the one hand, I agree. Not having internal expansion is a real killer on a desktop especially at that price point. OTOH, it used to be that on desktops/workstations you "needed" an add-on card to add sound, video and ethernet. Many on-board chips are good enough now that you don't need an add-in.

The only people needing internal expansion on this system will likely be for discrete cards for additional processing.

Apple opened a new production facility - in the USA - just to make a Mac Pro. It leads me to believe there might be a lower end model coming so production will be at full capacity.

By the time I'm done modifying my laptop to useable state - adding a mouse, a full keyboard, disabling the trackpad and adding a monitor ... I have a desktop. That said, I realize I should probably also have a checksum. Should one consider a different algorithm then MD5, for example to prevent collisions of the hashes?

However, it might get the boards reviewing the books to actually read the books that are being included in the curriculum.

I remember reading a story from Richard Feyman. He was asked to review books for his local board. If I recall, he was asked why his reviews took so long. He explained he read the books. Some of the others were simply approving books based on which one looked the best.

One of the problems seems to be that the asteroid struck in day-time so was obscured by the Sun. The Sun seems to be an obstacle to proper tracking of these 'smaller' asteroids on Earth or using satellites orbiting earth.

I'm not suggesting this will be practical or affordable. Has there been any discussion of using a satellite to orbit the moon? Perhaps a potential use of deep-space probes like Voyager 1 will be to track these asteroids in the future (if V1 hasn't been doing this already).
