That (new music sux) isn't my experience, though it shares something with it: Most new music that makes it to your local Clear Channel rebroadcast station is an insult; every time WAP plays an angel goes into the woodchipper. But if you're willing to dig a bit, you can find stuff that's a lot more interesting and musically challenging than, say, 80's hair bands or 70's disco or ... Mitski is putting out some interesting material (try Washing Machine Heart for a starter), PJ Harvey is still challenging audiences with new material. Or try Four Fists ("Joe Strummr"), or Rodney Crowell ("Redneck Hillbillies"), or Mountain Man ... don't know where your tastes lie.
Somebody on this thread has already cited Sturgeon's law, so yeah, there's that.
Check out the original substack article that caused the foofra. It's an interesting extended piece on the intersection of music and business.

Might be just me, but this sort of pressure seems to be accelerating in the past year ... Apple with their CSAM nark, England with their fade-to-black pedo, and Cambodia ("just because we said so"). Not saying it's a conspiracy; most likely just an increasingly valuable target (*more* people, spending *more* time on their personal devices). Western efforts seem to be either anti-pedo or anti-terrorist pretty uniformly, the better to incite fear in the easily frightened.

Ex-Houstonian here, just a side note that a wine fridge is an excellent place to keep the critical chocolate supply in this sort of climate as well ... would be for the drugs, too, but condensation is a problem when you open a 50(10C) degree bottle in a warm humid environment.

Submission + - China Sets New Records for Nuclear Fusion (globaltimes.cn)

AltMachine writes: China broke the controlled nuclear fusion record by keeping the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST,) located at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, by maintaining plasma temperature at 120 million Celsius for 101 seconds and 160 million Celsius for 20 seconds, a major step toward the test run of the fusion reactor, beating a previous record of maintaining the plasma temperature at 100 million C for 100 seconds set by South Korean scientists which in turn beat the earlier EAST record at 100 million degrees for shorter time. "The breakthrough is significant progress, and the ultimate goal should be keeping the temperature at a stable level for a long time," Li Miao, director of the physics department of the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, told the Global Times, adding that the next milestone might be to maintain the stability for a week or more.

Submission + - UK Police Stumble Upon Bitcoin Mine While Looking For Cannabis Farm (bbc.com)

phalse phace writes: A suspected Bitcoin "mining" operation illegally stealing electricity has been found by police who were searching for a cannabis farm.

Officers had been tipped off about the site on the Great Bridge Industrial Estate, Sandwell, and raided it on 18 May, West Midlands Police said. Instead of cannabis plants they found a bank of about 100 computer units.

The force said the cryptocurrency "mine" had effectively stolen thousands of pounds of electricity. Inquiries with network operator Western Power Distribution found an illegal connection to the electricity supply.

Detectives said they were tipped off about lots of people visiting the unit throughout the day and a police drone picked up a lot of heat coming from the building. Sgt Jennifer Griffin said, given the signs, they had expected to find a cannabis farm.
