Submission + - What is that gunk on the bottom of your mouse? 2

An anonymous reader writes: While working in a student computer lab at a major university for several years, I was appalled at how quickly that black gunk would built up on the bottom of the mice. Not only was it gross, but it kept the devices from sliding properly. What is that stuff? Has anyone ever analyzed it? How can it be avoided?

Submission + - Scholastic invokes DMCA for reporting Potter leak

ISurfTooMuch writes: Looks like DMCA abuse has just been taken to a new extreme. TechCrunch is reporting that it has received a takedown notice for simply reporting that the latest Harry Potter book is available on Bittorrent. The post also says that USA Today is reporting that Scholastic is contacting any sites that have written stories on the leaked copy, demanding that the information be taken down. Note that these sites aren't hosting copies of the book; they're being sent notices simply for reporting that it is available. What's next, sites receiving takedown notices for discussing the fact that piracy is occurring on the Internet?

Journal Journal: Rocketeers Find Large Impact Crater In Nevada 29

While participating in amateur rocket launches in Black Rock Desert (Burning Man site), Ian Kluft KO6YQ noticed rocks with some oddities. Through the Internet he learned the characteristics of impact craters, then found some clues in photographs and Google Maps. Examining the area he got samples of rock with impact patterns in them and other evidence. Previous geological puzzles in the region are well explained as impact structures. Volunteers are finding peculiarities in satellite imagery
