Congress Hears From Muzzled Scientists 664

BendingSpoons writes "More than 120 scientists across seven federal agencies have been pressured to remove the phrases 'global warming' and 'climate change' from various documents. The documents include press releases and, more importantly, communications with Congress. Evidence of this sort of political interference has been largely anecdotal to date, but is now detailed in a new report by the Union of Concerned Scientists. The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held hearings on this issue Tuesday; the hearing began by Committee members, including most Republicans, stating that global warming is happening and greenhouse gas emissions from human activity are largely to blame. The OGR hearings presage a landmark moment in climate change research: the release of the 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The IPCC report, drafted by 1,250 scientists and reviewed by an additional 2,500 scientists, is expected to state that 'there is a 90% chance humans are responsible for climate change' — up from the 2001 report's 66% chance. It probably won't make for comfortable bedtime reading; 'The future is bleak', said scientists."

Google Antiphishing Site Exposed Private User Data 69

Juha-Matti Laurio writes "Google has removed a few user names and passwords posted inadvertently to a phishing blacklist it compiles and makes publicly available on the Web. This information was submitted to Google by Firefox users with the browser's internal antiphishing toolbar. This feature, developed in cooperation with Google, enables users to report potential phishing sites to Google's blacklist database. Google has reportedly implemented a new mechanism detecting login data in submitted URLs to prevent sensitive information from getting posted to the list." The article notes that news of this minor lapse may obscure the ongoing problem of sensitive data exposed on the Web and findable via Google and other search services.

Submission + - PC Mag's Top 20 Wired Colleges

Dean Hougen writes: "Everyone loves rankings, right? Well, PC Magazine and The Princeton Review have surveyed US colleges and universities to find the "most connected, plugged-in, and high-tech campuses in the country" and present their "Top 20 Wired Colleges in a new article."

Of course, everyone loves rankings even more when they are ranked highly. So, in the interest of full disclosure, let me point out that the University of Oklahoma, my professional home, came in at number 10 and the University of Minnesota, my graduate alma mater, came in at number 12, beating out schools like Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, CalTech, and many others."
