Just remembering about how much carbon I spent reinstalling those windows 95 (21 diskettes) / 98 (38 diskettes) / SE / 2000 / XP. Yep, knew those serials by heart. Oh, yeah and just shy of diskette #18 - "Disk read error. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart" - They'll never recover that carbon, neither I my neurons back.

That would only make you feel more comfortable not make you safer. Considering currently there is no practical way to know your iPhone has been hacked / exploited, I see not point on this statement being valid. A successful developer could turn evil and buy hacks to include in their apps and neither Apple nor you would not know it unless it's too late (check out this Facebook story).
A security protection application would need elevated access to the system to be able to scan for memory corruption or illegal system access, something not possible to my knowledge.

Unless I have that, the best I can do is to keep the number of apps to a minimum.

Well, as a Fedora user for a decade, after the last hardware refresh few years ago, I switched to Linux Mint because:
  1. 1. The new system was using NVME drive and under my configuration Fedora was freezing - once/twice a day. Never happened under Mint btw
  2. 2. Linux Mint came with Cinnamon spin, a much better experience than vanilla Gnome 3. (I think now it is available under Fedora as well)
  3. 3. Didn’t like DNF/YUM transition - but will have to live with it anyway in CentOS 8

After these years I still hate the packaging on Debian, but Debian/Ubuntu based distros still feels like making more easier to run latest apps with bugfixes (through PPAs). So I still weight if I will go back to Fedora at work (the only reason would be it matches CentOS service naming and paths).

Actually the other way around. My last experience was with an Epson tank printer at my daugther's kindergarten - brand new. I installed, filled-up the tanks. The teacher printed about 50 pages and after two weeks she called me it doesn't print anymore. She used for two days, then not for two weeks. The ink has dried on the heads and the printer was useless. Like the one above, every experience I saw with ink printers was a bummer. Basically you pay 20 - 30$ for a cartrige to print once or twice and if you don't use it for few weeks is worthless. That's why I have a laser.
