Comment Re:This pact is old news (Score 1) 1088

You just made it a partisan issue with that last statement.

Just because a democrat-controlled legislature and a republican executive disagree does not make it a 'partisan' issue. I am unaffiliated, but even I know why the electoral college is a good thing. My disagreeing with the bill in the article doesn't mean I'm against the party trying to pass it. It means I'm against the idea that those individuals are trying to pass into law.

Humans Hardwired to Believe in Supernatural Deity? 1852

dohcrx writes "According to a Sunday New York Times article, 6 in 10 Americans believe in the devil and hell, 7 in 10 believe in angels, heaven and the existence of miracles and life after death, while 92% believe in a personal God. The article explores the possibility that this belief structure may be ingrained into our genetic makeup. 'When a trait is universal, evolutionary biologists look for a genetic explanation and wonder how that gene or genes might enhance survival or reproductive success ... Which is the better biological explanation for a belief in God — evolutionary adaptation or neurological accident? Is there something about the cognitive functioning of humans that makes us receptive to belief in a supernatural deity?'"

Submission + - BulletProof pendrive video test

justelite writes: "PRETEC tell us that i-Disk BulletProof is constructed with double layers of metal protection, capable of sealing water or fire from damaging the circuit, and even shield of the heavy impact of a bullet. But this BulletProof is for real? A video test show us that i-Disk BulletProof "survive" to 44 gun but not to a 500 Magnum."

Submission + - Lying Admin No Longer at Wikipedia

abscissa writes: Essjay, the one of highest level ups on Wikipedia who lied about his credentials in an effort to "protect his identity" (though he later announced his real name, age, and place of residence), announced that he will be leaving Wikipedia. He claimed to have several advanced degrees in theology and even went so far as to pretend to be a professor and write in support of a student (that content has now been permanently erased). He had been promoted to a paid Wikia position by Jimbo Wales, but after an outpouring of anger he was asked to resign by Jimbo (who claimed not to have all the facts until very recently).

Submission + - The Cancerous Role Viruses May Play

eldavojohn writes: "New Scientist is running a brief article on viruses playing a role in causing cancer. From the article, "During tumour development, the chromosomes of affected cells often become wildly rearranged, but no one knew why. Duelli and Lazebnik suspected that cell fusion — when two or more cells unite by merging membranes — might be to blame. Several common viruses can initiate this process.""

Submission + - Top 20 Comic Weapons

Ant writes: "Cardboard Monocle has its top 20 list of comic book weapons. It is based on some characteristics: "When compiling the top 20 comic book weapons of all time, one must consider the weapon and not the wielder. We chose weapons that define the characters they belong to. Without their weapons, the characters on this list would lose their identities... We have purposely left out any 'weapons of limitless power.'..." Seen on Neatorama."

Submission + - Computer Scientists Tackle Pioneer Anomaly

eldavojohn writes: "Computer scientists are analyzing the data of the well known Pioneer Anomaly. For those of you not familiar with it, both Pioneer 10 & 11 suffered severe deviations from their expected course at they travelled out into our outer solar system. From the article, "The source of the deceleration has long been suspected to be heat escaping from the small nuclear generators onboard, known as RTGs (Radioisotope Thermal Generators). Previous analyses that claimed to rule out this effect have been contested. To supply a definitive answer, an international team of scientists are re-analysing the tracking data and the telemetry data." The current assumption is that the direction of the decelleration is towards the Earth which would almost certainly indicate the anomaly was caused by faulty technology or an artefact of receiving the data at the ground stations. "If, however, the direction is towards the Sun, new gravitational physics may be needed to explain the effect.""

Submission + - Slashdot FireHose Beta Sneak Preview

Davak writes: "The old fogey slashdot has announced a new (dare I say, Web 2.0) youthful, digg-like voting system-Firehose. This new code is described as a "collaborative system designed to allow users to assist editors in the story selection process." This review of the Firehose describes the new features and implications of this new system. For example, much of Firehose's AJAX eye candy is built around yahoo's ajax toolkit."

Sun May Be Warming Both Earth and Mars 1050

MCraigW writes "Simultaneous warming on Earth and Mars suggests that our planet's recent climate changes might have a natural — and not a human-induced — cause. Mars, it appears, has also been experiencing milder temperatures in recent years. In 2005 data from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor and Odyssey missions revealed that the carbon dioxide 'ice caps' near Mars's south pole had been diminishing for three summers in a row. Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of the St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, says the Mars data is evidence that the current global warming on Earth is being caused by changes in the sun."
