Submission + - Microsoft issues official statement over Halo 3 ba (pro-g.co.uk)

JamesO writes: "Following a memorable day which saw UK retailer Argos selling Halo 3 to consumers a week before release, and Microsoft seemingly willing to ban gamers from Xbox LIVE for playing the game, Microsoft has issued an official statement which should put the debacle to bed.

"We can confirm that Microsoft is not taking any action (such as banning Xbox Live accounts) against gamers who are playing Halo 3 before the official street date. Any rumours or speculation to the contrary are false," reads the statement issued by Microsoft this evening.

Halo 3 is scheduled for release in North America on September 25, across Europe on September 26 and in Japan on September 27."

Submission + - How going triple core will save AMD's ass (techarp.com) 1

crazyeyes writes: "AMD has announced that they are going to go triple-core with their Phenom desktop processor. AMD promises that this new class of processor will be a "triple threat" to Intel's domination of the desktop market.

But is the triple-core Phenom really that amazing? Some have argued that it is nothing more than typical AMD bluster — all wind and no substance. However, this triple-core processor may have more than meets the eye. Here's a quote from the editorial :-

"According to AMD, these new processors represent a "multi-core triple threat" to Intel's current hemogeny in the multi-core desktop segment. They claim that current quad-core desktop processors (the Intel quad-core Core 2 processors, in other words) only represent less than 2% of the market. Hence, AMD believes their triple-core Phenom processors will fill the market's need for more powerful processors without paying for more expensive quad-core processors."

Submission + - OpenSSH Diffie-Hellman key exchange may be weak (musecurity.com)

roju writes: Adam Bozanich writes: While developing an implementation of IKE for our platform, I noticed an astonishing behavior in the servers I was testing against: Not a single IKE implementation, which included products from the biggest names in network infrastructure, were validating the Diffie-Hellman public keys that I sent. A consequence of this is that any deployment of these servers will allow the disclosure of secret information when a peer is in collusion with a passive attacker.

Submission + - ACLU objects to police scanning license plates (ap.org) 1

dustman81 writes: The ACLU is objecting to the Springdale, Ohio police department using an automated license plate scanner on their patrol cars to locate stolen vehicles or those who's owners are wanted on felony warrants. The scanner can read 900 license plates an hour traveling at highway speeds. So far, the scanner has located 95 stolen cars and helped locate 111 wanted felons. The locations of the license plates scanned are tagged with GPS data so when the data is downloaded, it can cross-referenced on a map. If the plate is wanted, the times and locations of where it was scanned can be referenced. This system is also in use in British Columbia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENGY1CD9y_4
