Adaptive optics works great at infrared wavelengths. It does not (yet) do well at visible wavelengths. Even the 2.5 meter mirror of Hubble has better resolution at visible wavelengths than the 10 meter Keck mirror due to atmospheric blurring. Further, adaptive optics is only effective over small fields of view (such as a single star and planet). One can not take a wide field view of a nebula or a galaxy and get a high resolution adaptive optics view over the whole field.

Yes, the text is wrong. There are several methods for detecting the presence of an exoplanet, though the "wobble" (aka radial velocity) method has so far been the dominant one. One can also other methods like transits (like Kepler), astrometry, gravitational lensing, and pulsar timing. After Kepler has completed its mission, there will likely be more planets detected by transits than by any other method.

That depends on what you mean by "a really decent" image. We can see surface features on Pluto, albeit still a very fuzzy view. These exoplanets are unresolved - we can see they are there, but we can see absolutely no details. Further, recognize that a Jupiter-size planet is over 100,000 km in diameter, while the largest Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs, which includes Pluto) are at best 3,000 km. Surface area goes as the square of the diameter, so you can see that the amount of light reflected will be vastly larger for a giant planet than for even the biggest KBOs. Plus KBOs tend to be rather dark and reflect little of the light that hits them (low albedo). BUT, this will change in 2015 when New Horizons gets to the Pluto/Charon system and shows the details.

Comment Other Direct Images of Exoplanets Exist (Score 4, Informative) 189

There are several direct images of exoplanets available. Hubble took one of a planet around Fomalhaut, which was announced the same day that Keck announced three planets around HR 8799 (Nov 13, 2008). The next week, ESO announced a possible planet around Beta Pictoris, which has recently been confirmed. What these folks at Gemini are saying is that they announced a possible direct image earlier in 2008, which they have now confirmed, so theirs was really the first. It is a game of "who got the first direct image of a planet around another star?". It doesn't really matter, but it is very cool that we can now directly see not only the 8 planets in our solar system, but also at least 6 more in other solar systems. At some pivotal point in the near future we will have more pictures of planets outside our solar system than within it!

Ubuntu's "Lucid Lynx" Enters Beta 366

ActionDesignStudios writes "The upcoming release of Ubuntu, titled 'Lucid Lynx,' has just entered the beta cycle. Alongside the usual desktop and server versions, a special version has been released that is designed to run on Amazon's EC2 cloud service. This release of Ubuntu does away with the brown 'Human' Gnome theme we've all become accustomed to, replaced by a new version Canonical says is inspired by light. The new release also includes much better integration with social networking services such as Twitter, identi.ca and Facebook, among others."

Ubisoft's Authentication Servers Go Down 634

ZuchinniOne writes "With Ubisoft's fantastically awful new DRM you must be online and logged in to their servers to play the games you buy. Not only was this DRM broken the very first day it was released, but now their authentication servers have failed so absolutely that no-one who legally bought their games can play them. 'At around 8am GMT, people began to complain in the Assassin's Creed 2 forum that they couldn't access the Ubisoft servers and were unable to play their games.' One can only hope that this utter failure will help to stem the tide of bad DRM."

New I/O Standard Bids To Replace Mini PCI Express 31

DeviceGuru writes "LinuxDevices reports that a group of companies today unveiled — and demonstrated products based on — a tiny new PCI Express expansion standard. Although it's somewhat larger than the PCI Express Mini Card, the tiny new 43mm x 65mm FeaturePak card's high density 230-pin edgecard connector provides twice the number of PCI Express and USB 2.0 channels to the host computer, plus 100 lines dedicated to general purpose I/O, of which 34 signal pairs are implemented with enhanced isolation for use in applications such as gigabit Ethernet or high-precision analog I/O. While FeaturePaks will certainly be used in all sorts of embedded devices (medical instruments, test equipment, etc.), the tiny cards could also be used for developing configurable consumer devices, for example to add an embedded firewall/router or security processor to laptop or notebook computers, or for modular functionality in TV set-top-boxes and Internet edge devices." The president of Diamond Systems, which invented the new card, said "Following the FeaturePak initiative's initial launch, we intend to turn the FeaturePak specification, trademark, and logo over to a suitable standards organization so it can become an industry-wide, open-architecture, embedded standard" (but to use the logo you have to join the organization).

Disney Releases 3D Texture Mapper Source Code 83

dsavi writes "Ptex, Walt Disney Animation Studio's cutting-edge 3D texture mapping library which was first used on nearly every surface in the 2008 animated feature Bolt, was released under the BSD license on Friday. Quoting the announcement on monophyl.com: 'We expect to follow Ptex with other open source projects that we hope the community will find beneficial. We will soon be launching a new Walt Disney Animation Studios Technology page under disneyanimation.com. It will include links to our open source projects as will as a library of recent publications.' This looks good for open source 3D graphics."
