Comment Been Using Since 2007 (Score 2) 103

I need email, Web LibreOffice, GIMP and a programming editor (I like Geany). I currently use Linux Mint, I'm 71 although pretty geeky. It's probably not as pretty as Windows, Mac or Chromebook but does everything I want. Only exception is music, Midi etc. but that's improving.

Comment Why not 'just a phone'? (Score 1) 140

I'm 70 years old, spent 40 years in tech and still enjoy it. My house is full of Raspberry P, bigger computers and obsolete but enjoyable tech. So I'm not much of a Luddite. But I just want a 'phone', you know 'talk to people' and 'send texts', not be data mined, get push advertising, tell random folks where I am, FB, Insta etc. etc.

I regard the ownership of of OS by Google and Apple as a serious potential problem too, means that they can get anything they 'want' without depending on 'apps' (which I hate and which break the web model).

So this year, in my old and grumpy persona, I may well go back to a feature phone since open OS phones are still pretty expensive and rare. I'm seeing a little spike in UK feature phone use currently too, they're simpler for non-tech oldies who will want (like me) a bigger screen for Zoom and the web and therefore do those activities from a desktop.

In spite of all the FUD and criticism, I've used a Linux desktop without any significant problem since 2007. I've kept a Windows system because of certain bits of music software (and 'music' hasn't been that great on Linux, but steadily improving) but I hope to junk that by the end of this year.

Comment What about hive? (Score 2) 14

https://www.hive.co.uk//WhatsH... has been around for about a decade and does a very similar thing. It looks like the 'deal' for bookshops is better, interesting to see whether there's any difference in royalties. Royalties are general bad at Amazon, that's apart from the workplace practices and the allergy to local taxation.

Not being able to get together in person, particularly internationally, is a pure negative

So we need to fly around the place for face-to-face meetings? I don't think so.Since the 1980s, at the start of teleconference (where everyone seemed like they were underwater), I've worked in projects that effectively used remote meetings. Last one, a couple of years ago, I flew from London into Austria, twice in a six month project. That was a 'nice to have' so that we could eat a little good Viennese food, mainly.
