Comment K.I.S.S. the driver (Score 1) 212

Whatever you do, keep the driver accessible controls dead simple. Put the full feature touchscreen/keyboard/jeejaw/whatever in front of the passenger seat.

Not all jurisdictions have a distracted driving law, but they should.

As can Exchange through Active Sync (on Android or iOS). Don't invest in a company that is posting a billion in hardware losses this year.

Actually, its shy of a half billion Press Release PDF

They still shipped 14 million units in Q3, still revenue positive, still have 75 million subscribers. Is this up to iphad numbers? No. But they're still profitable and I think they'll be around for quite a while yet.

Submission + - Hubble To Use the Moon To View Transit of Venus (discovery.com)

astroengine writes: "On June 5 or 6 this year — the exact time and date depends on where you are in the world — Venus will be visible as a small black circle crossing the disk of the sun. Usually, the Hubble Space Telescope would have no business observing this event — the sun is too close for its optics. But plans are afoot for Hubble to observe the reflected sunlight bouncing off the lunar surface during the transit. As the sunlight will pass through the Venusian atmosphere, the transit will provide invaluable spectroscopic data about Venus' atmospheric composition. This, in turn, will help astronomers in characterizing the atmospheres of planets orbiting other stars."

I do not think it is necessary to reform all organizations to match some illusionary techno elite mold.

Scouts/Guides teach different skills, like what the sun looks like and how to get along with others, that are not well represented by the can't-lift-face-from-LCD crowd.

Badges are about basic skills and sense of accomplishment (little milestones met). Leaderboards are about competition. Each has their merit.

Comment Buy RIM (Score 1) 570

Why not buy RIM?
I know (insert blackberry hate here), etc. But owning a proper enterprise device management suite like BES would go a long way to getting iphones & ipads into corporate users hands.

But as the IT guys who has to support both blackberries and iphones, maybe that's just my personal dream.

Why can't all the BB haters just be honest.
Its not about touch screen keyboards vs physical keys.
Its not about security and central administration vs cool TV commercials

Its about Angry Birds.

And it doesn't play on BB.

For the TLDR crowd, just scroll down to the bullet list and look at what BB Fusion is offering/promising. I can assure you, these are needed.

-secure network
-enterprise management
-on devices that'll play angry birds.
Hopefully that'll keep everyone happy.

Cedega Being Replaced By GameTree Linux 124

An anonymous reader writes "TransGaming Cedega, the software forked from Wine that allows running Windows games under Linux, is being discontinued and replaced by GameTree Linux. This new software is also free. From the new website: 'TransGaming is pleased to announce the continued development of Cedega Technology under the GameTree Developer Program. This repositioning of the technology that powered the Cedega Gaming Service will allow the entire Linux community to gain free access going forward. Cedega is a cross-platform enablement technology that allows for Windows-native games to be executed on both the Linux desktop and embedded Linux platforms.'"

Apple Reverses iPad "No Cash Purchase" Policy 377

ZipK writes "After a few days of bad publicity, Apple has reversed its no cash purchase policy, explaining that the policy was originally implemented to limit the number of iPads an individual could buy during the introductory period of short supply. Now that supply has caught up with demand — and the story has hit front pages and gained national attention — Apple has reversed its policy, and taken the opportunity to put a bow on the story by giving the formerly scorned Diane Campbell a free iPad."

Comment Missing points of view.... (Score 1) 258

A couple of points seem to be missing from the discussion here.

First, is the ISP's ability to volunteer the information. If I were on the receiving end of that fax, I would have provided the information too (once I was sure it really was the police, and not just some scam). My defense to criticism would be:
-illegal activity/failing to secure your system puts you in breach of your TOS*. We owe you nothing.
-they're our records we can do whatever we want with them. You breached your TOS, remember.
-we are a good Canadian company and don't fear the police. In fact we want to help them in their efforts to get the bad people off the streets.

Another point is that having an IP address does not mean charges will be laid. It is mearly one step in the investigation.

*These are both terms in my ISP's TOS. I should also point out that my ISP has refused to give IP's to copywrite lawyers waving civil lawsuits around. I think its fair to say that criminal code would be handled differently.
