Submission + - Windows Vista SP1 Includes More Than 300 Hot Fixes (informationweek.com)

mytrip writes: "Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has released a detailed roster of the contents of its forthcoming service pack for Windows Vista, and the list includes more than 300 hot fixes covering everything from data protection to video performance.

Microsoft marketing VP Michael Sievert told InformationWeek in Marchthat Vista was "high quality right out of the gate" and that the company would likely dribble out small updates as required via its Windows Update service.

Since then, however, users have apparently reported enough problems with Vista to force a change in Microsoft's thinking."

Submission + - Football field-sized kite powers latest freighter (networkworld.com) 2

coondoggie writes: "A kite the size of a football field will provide most of the power for a German heavy freight ship set to launch in December. The Beluga shipping company that owns the 460-foot Beluga said it expects the kites to decrease fuel consumption by up to 50% in optimal cases as well as a cutback of the emission of greenhouse gases on sea by 10 to 20%. Interestingly, the ship will be hauling windmills from Esbjerg, Denmark to Houston, Texas. The company that makes the kite for the German transport, SkySails, has made kites for large yachts but is targeting commercial ships with new, larger kites. And it has the ambitious goal of equipping 1,500 ships with kites by 2015. http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/22225"

Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding." The Demonoid IRC channel says that the site is down, but the tracker is still working.

Submission + - Northrop Grumman swallows Scaled Composites

KaiBeezy writes: "Burt Rutan is the ultimate superhero to outsider engineers across the galaxy. We sure hope he cut a flexible enough deal to make it worth being assimilated by Northrop Grumman. A huge black budget maybe. Use some of the money to fund another X Prize, please Mr. Rutan, and don't let them make you shave your sideburns. Does this portend increased investment and partnerships with big-aerospace for new space tech startups and innovators like SpaceX, XCOR, Rocketplane, Armadillo, Bigelow and others?

Submission + - A wireless felony?

jjackalb writes: Customers regularly log onto the internet using the café's wireless network to check their e-mail and surf the web while they enjoy the coffee and ambience. Sam Peterson II: "I just went down and checked my e-mail and didn't see a problem with that." But Peterson did it everyday, and from his car. Piggybacking — using someone else's WiFi without their permission — isn't legal. A warrant was sworn for Peterson's arrest on a "five year felony, $10,000 fine,"
