Submission + - Rogers Communications down. No cell service or Internet for millions in Canada (www.cbc.ca)

farrellj writes: Eary Friday morning, Rogers Communications ((TSX:RCI.B)(NYSE:RCI)) network went down. As the third-largest Cell and Internet provider in Canada, that means millions of Canadians have no contact with the outside world. Rogers also provides connectivity for INTERAC bank and debit services, so people currently can only use cash for their purchases. In many places, they also provide 911 Emergency services, and that is unavailable, too. The call centers themselves are still available, I assume they have multiple/redundant service providers, and users of other cell networks can still call 911. Internet traffic across Canada is down by 25% due to this outage. Currently, there is no indication of when they will be back online, or what has caused the outage.

Looks like Broadcom will pull a Novell...Netware literally owned the market for LAN networking, then blew it. Broadcom has, or will soon own VMware, which like Netware has the largest market share in their sector. If they change over to a subscription model, the long time established users of this type of software will no longer be looking at the cost periodic upgrades, but will be "hemorrhaging" money every month, and will not be able to schedule investments when it is best for them, not best for when Broadcom needs another infusion of cash. This will certainly drive companies to other technologies, most of which are free and open source based...

From his early days, his music worked well with images. Some of my favourite works of his are Albedo 0.39, Heaven and Hell, Soil Festivities, Blade Runner (of course!), and many others. I picked upon his music in the late 1970s, and have been a fan ever since, up to, and including his last release, JUNO to JUPITER. His passing is a sad day, but we should celebrate the wonderful music that he gave us over the years.

Submission + - 5G & EMR "protection" stickers that are dangerously radioactive still availa

farrellj writes: Stickers that claim to protect you from 5G and other electromagnetic radiation using negative ions are apparently made with thorium, which is fairly radioactive. This information is not new. What is new is that this "snake oil" is still available online, sold by retailers like Amazon, and still just as radioactive, as Big Clive shows in his recent video.

Seymour Papert specifically designed LOGO for visual learning. It makes it easy for you to see when you type a command, something visual happens on the screen. I've taught LOGO to 5 year old kids, and 80 year old seniors, and it makes it much easier for them to grasp some of the basic fundamentals of programming.

Submission + - Justice Department releases three hour video from January 6 insurrection (cnn.com)

quonset writes: The Justice Department has released a three hour video from inside a tunnel on the Lower West Terrace during the January 6th insurrection. The video was taken by a Capitol security camera within the tunnel and shows attempts by insurrectionists to breach the police line.

Inusrrectionists can be seen using metal poles, flag poles, various types of chemical sprays, police shields, furniture, crutches, spraying a fire extinguisher as well as violently assaulting officers with fists and feet.

Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone was pulled out of the police line and into the crowd by a rioter who had his arm around his neck. The video shows Fanone eventually falling down and disappearing into the mass of rioters, where he said he was tased in the neck, beaten with a flagpole and heard rioters screaming "kill him with his own gun." Fanone said he suffered a heart attack and fell unconscious during the attack.

Police were able to push the rioters to the edge of the tunnel's entrance over half an hour into the assault, using pepper spray and their batons against the crowd. Still, after a long standoff with police, the rioters began a second attack on the line of officers.

At the entrance of the tunnel, rioter and QAnon supporter Rosanne Boyland lay on the ground. She had died of an accidental overdose, according to DC's chief medical examiner. Heeding her friends' call for help, prosecutors say two officers waded into the crowd to help Boyland.

The two officers were knocked down and dragged into the mob where they were viciously beaten with an upside-down American flag and other weapons. The attack landed one officer in the hospital with staples in his head to stop the bleeding, and the other with injuries to his face and shoulder according to court documents.

We have all seen the ads where they asked for 10 years of experience on a software that has only existed for 5 years...and wanting a university degree for entry level jobs. It has gotten to the point where you practically have to lie on your resume to met there criteria, or not apply because lying offends your ethics.

What I think is that this initiative from Microsoft is really just an attempt to prime the pump to flood IT with "qualified" people and keep IT pay low.

A FLIR SkyRanger R60 Multi-roter UAV flown by the RCMP collided with an RCMP Helicopter last year (2020) in February. They are either flying these UAVs beyond their line of sight, or the SkyRanger R60 is really a two operator (one to fly, one to monitor the FLIR) UAV, but they only had one person do both.
