Submission + - Doing digital art when you can't use your hand?

Sludge writes: "A good friend of mine who is a digital artist was recently involved in a house fire in which he suffered third degree burns to his "art hand" which have made him unable to handle a mouse or a stylus for the coming months. If you or anyone near you has lost the ability to do something you love due to a physical injury, you know how painful and frustrating it can be. I need help discovering alternative software and input devices he can use while he recovers the ability to use his hand. The programs he uses most are 3dsmax, Z-Brush and Photoshop and he is used to working with a Wacom stylus. What expressive art tools are available that deemphasize precision work with your coordinated hand?"

Submission + - Resilient Android Tablet

codegen writes: I've been teaching an undergraduate operating systems class based on Linux for several years now. However, the more recent kernels have become much more complicated and less suitable for use in an introductory OS course. I was thinking about switching to android, which has a simple linux kernel as well as a VM. While some of the work can be done in a simulator, I also have access to some curriculum development money to buy some tablets for use by the students. Since the work done will be introductory (some changes to the kernel, some system enhancements) we don't really need high end tablets. However, the tablet must be resiliant to flash errors, so that no matter what is flashed, one can always flash a backup image to recover the device. Since we have to buy a fair number of these, I'm looking for suggestions in the $200-$300 range.

Submission + - Xinhua, China Mobile announce search venture (yahoo.com)

suraj.sun writes: The state-run Xinhua News Agency said Thursday it will launch its own search venture, giving Google a new, well-financed rival following the closure of its China-based Web search engine.

In a two-sentence dispatch, Xinhua said it signed a framework agreement Thursday with China Mobile Ltd., the world's biggest phone carrier by subscribers, to set up a search and international media company. It said work has reached a "substantive operation" stage.

The communist government is trying to build up Chinese technology industries and at the same time is giving Xinhua and other state media billions of dollars to expand their presence in foreign markets.

The venture might be a new threat to Google Inc.'s China market share, which has declined since the U.S. company closed its mainland search engine in March to avoid cooperating with Beijing's Web censorship.

Submission + - Oracle sues Google over use of Java (pcmag.com) 1

Underfoot writes: Oracle said Thursday that it has sued Google for patent and copyright infringement over the use of Java in the Android operating system. The Android operating system uses Java both in its software development kit and a Java-like virtual machine, called Dalvik, in the runtime environment. It is both the SDK and Dalvik that Oracle targeted with its suit, claiming that they infringed Sun's patents. Oracle also claims that Google has infringed its trademarks, including code and documentation. If this suit moves forward, Open Source as a whole could be in for a wild ride.

Submission + - India says Google, Skype, RIM must meet security n (reuters.com) 1

suraj.sun writes: India says Google, Skype, RIM must meet security needs:

India will go after any company, including Google, after cracking down on BlackBerry in its quest to keep the world's fastest growing mobile phone market safe from militants and cyber spying, a government source said on Friday.

India has given RIM, until August 31 to comply with a request to gain access to encrypted corporate email and messaging services or those services will be shut.

RIM is under pressure from governments around the world to give access to its codes. Other companies have also faced scrutiny since authorities intensified their fight against Islamic militants misusing mobile devices.

Pakistani-based militants used mobile and satellite phones in the attacks on Mumbai in 2008, which killed 166 people. The militants were suspected of using Internet telephony, which is widely available, in the attacks.

Submission + - How to act like Microsoft? Get sued over Java... 1

chaboud writes: Like a blast from Microsoft's past, Java's new keepers at Oracle have filed what will probably end up being an unfashionably out-of-style double-breasted lawsuit over Google's use of Java in Android, throwing in all of the usual sweet legal nothings, such as "willful," "injunction," and "damages." I wish someone had told me earlier that the way to make money off of software was to stand around with a law degree.
