Submission + - PSone and PS2 games look awful on the PS3

Sad at Sony writes: Sony's slipped up once again. The PS3 games console seems to be having a really hard time dealing with PSone and PS2 games.
It seems that there is a serious issue with the way the new PS3 handles PSone and PS2 games. The 480i games are outputted at a lower resolution. To make matters worse, the output is jagged and contains a number of distracting screen artifacts.
This issue apparently has nothing to do with the TV used, cables or resolution settings ... it's just down to the console. Hopefully this can be fixed by a firmware update, but you would have thought an issue of this kind would have been picked up on by Sony some time ago.

Did Sony actually do any serious testing of the PS3 or did they just push it out of the door in a rush to satisfy shareholders?

Submission + - Fox Threatens Website for Linking to Online Videos

tttonyyy writes: "Link to videos on YouTube, and you might find the full force of Fox's lawyers bearing down on you and your ISP. This is the position that Quicksilverscreen finds itself in. Although no video material is hosted on the site, Fox have served takedown notices for linking to material that infringes on their intellectual property rights. It would be interesting to know if similar takedown notices have been served to the sites that hosted the videos."

Microsoft Makes Testing IE6 and 7 Easier 167

davidmcg writes "Finally, Microsoft has made steps to make testing IE6 and IE7 easier for Windows users. Previously, you had to pay for an additional Windows license to legally run both versions of IE for testing purposes. Now Microsoft is making available free Windows XP/IE6 images available for VirtualPC (also free as MS is competing with VMWare). This means that you can run IE6 in a virtual machine while running IE7 on your host machine. The drawback is that the download is set to expire April 2007 ... although we are promised new versions will be released. What Microsoft doesn't mention is that Virtual PC also runs on Windows 2000 (and IE7 doesn't). Therefore it's possible to install this Windows XP VPC image on your Win2k machine. You can then update IE6 on the XP image to IE7, testing IE7 without upgrading from Win2k. This is all-around excellent news for web developers."

Slashdot Posting Bug Infuriates Haggard Admins 262

Last night we crossed over 16,777,216 comments in the database. The wise amongst you might note that this number is 2^24, or in MySQLese an unsigned mediumint. Unfortunately, like 5 years ago we changed our primary keys in the comment table to unsigned int (32 bits, or 4.1 billion) but neglected to change the index that handles parents. We're awesome! Fixing is a simple ALTER TABLE statement... but on a table that is 16 million rows long, our system will take 3+ hours to do it, during which time there can be no posting. So today, we're disabling threading and will enable it again later tonight. Sorry for the inconvenience. We shall flog ourselves appropriately. Update: 11/10 12:52 GMT by J : It's fixed.

Jimmy Wales Resigns Chair at Wikipedia 71

user24 writes "As reported by Wikipedia's Signpost ezine, 'The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees has moved forward with a step in restructuring the organization by reorganizing itself. Following a planning retreat in Frankfurt, Jimmy Wales stepped down as Chair of the board, and Florence Nibart-Devouard was chosen to replace him ... Wales, meanwhile, will continue to serve on the board and assume the honorary title of Chairman Emeritus. He will remain active in Wikimedia projects, but chose to pass on the responsibility of heading the board, due in part to his commitments to outside projects.'"

Zune — $249.99 On Nov. 14 355

Cubricon writes, "As expected, Microsoft has dropped their price on the Zune in response to Apple's recent iPod updates. Ars Technica has an article that discusses the Zune's use of Microsoft's prepaid 'points' system for songs. Will the masses notice the difference between an iPod and a Zune? Will they want the FM and wireless capabilities?" The Zune lists for $0.99 more than the comparable iPod and songs from the Zune Marketplace will cost just under $0.99.

Mozilla Firefox 2.0 Alpha Peeking Out (Or Not) 216

anadgouda writes "Mozilla Firefox 2.0 alpha is released. The links for download were not available directly on Mozilla.com website. Being Alpha, all features might not work and most of the plugins might not be compatible." Reading thru the comments, it appears there's some disparity as to whether or not this is actually just a naming scheme that they use; but let me reiterate that there has been no official announcement from Mozilla, so take with a giant grain of salt. Some good screenshots at OSdir.
