Submission + - 1.5M Penguins in Hidden Supercolony Discovered (sciencealert.com) 1

_Sharp'r_ writes: In 2014, researchers spotted telltale poop stains on NASA photos of the Danger Islands, indicating there may be Penguin activity in an area blocked by thick sea ice and not considered to be penguin habitat. When an expedition was mounted to investigate, ecologists were shocked to discover 1.5M penguins, more than lived in all of the rest of the Antarctic Peninsula combined.

Comment Crowdfunding is not pre-ordering (Score 5, Insightful) 166

People confuse crowdfunding with pre-ordering. In crowdfunding you sponsor someone's attempt to achieve something, because you want it to happen. Perks are just an additional incentive. Sometimes a perk happens to be a product, but it's still a perk for your sponsorship, not something you bought or pre-ordered.

I would happily pay to have Snapseed open-sourced. I really like its effects / filters, but the fact the app is limited to Android and iOS is ridiculous. If it was open-sourced, I hope the effects / filters could be ported to a library which then could be used by GIMP or DigiKam.

Submission + - Robots hit the streets -- and the streets hit back (cnn.com)

An anonymous reader writes: As robots begin to appear on sidewalks and streets, they're being hazed and bullied. Last week, a drunken man allegedly tipped over a 300-pound security robot in Mountain View, California... Knightscope, which makes the robot that was targeted in Mountain View, said it's had three bullying incidents since launching its first prototype robot three years ago. In 2014, a person attempted to tackle a Knightscope robot. Last year in Los Angeles, people attempted to spray paint a Knightscope robot. The robot sensed the paint and sounded an alarm, alerting local security and the company's engineers... the robot's cameras filmed the pranksters' license plate, making it easy to track them down.

Submission + - US Navy to Test Powerful 150-Kilowatt Laser (nationaldefensemagazine.org)

schwit1 writes: The U.S. Navy, which has already developed a 30-kilowatt laser that has been used operationally, will soon test a new directed energy weapon that is five times more powerful, said the vice chief of naval operations July 23.

The Office of Naval Research “will perform a shipboard test of a 150-killowatt laser weapon system in the near future,” said Adm. Bill Moran during a speech at Booz Allen Hamilton’s Directed Energy Summit, which was held in Washington, D.C.

The Navy’s 30-kilowatt laser weapon is currently onboard the USS Ponce. The system, which has been used operationally in the Persian Gulf, offers military leaders precision accuracy at a low cost, Moran said.

The laser weapon system, or LaWs, "has an extremely low-cost per engagement ratio,” he said. “We’re spending pennies on the dollars every time we use that capability.”
