Except you can't select one outlier for your calculations. I mean, you CAN - but it's terrible science.

New York, due to its policies, put a lot of Covid-positive people into nursing homes! Which is about the worst thing you can do, so of course their numbers are higher - they are skewed by the population that was most affected. As time goes on, and it affects more of the general population (read younger people), that number will go down.

Which is about the stupidest thing anyone has ever said. If tomorrow was going to be my last day, I'd be living it up with no concern for the day after.

This is something I would expect from a teenager who is only concerned with themselves.

One day left is just enough time to: tell people you love them and appreciate them, spend some time with your kids and give them any last-minute advice you have, do one thing for your community to make it a better place to live, take a moment to look around and understand how cool the world is, and perhaps most importantly, update the damn documentation for your code.

If you want to go to Iowa, consider moving outside of a city. While more rural than most people would like, I was looking at a 4 Bed, 3 Bath house on 2.8 acres for only $279k. The "shed" for your yard gear had three overhead doors. Not full-size car overhead doors, but enough for your riding mower, quad, Bobcat, or whatever other yard equipment you wanted. Farm/rural property is CHEAP because most people want to live in a city instead of enjoying quiet and nature.

The property was about 20 miles to the nearest Grocery store/Walmart.

That value is pretty high, I think for govt use they put it at ~ $10mil/person.

That's the value you get if you ask the person how much it would cost for them to risk their life. So, as an example, would you play Russian Roulette for $1.6 million?

Of course, "Russian Roulette Professional" isn't a standard job in the U.S. so it is things like, "How much more do I have to pay you to be a crab boat fisherman, instead of a regular commercial fisherman?" Or "Welder" vs. "Deep Sea Welder."

An actuary would tell you, from a neutral perspective, that a life is generally worth a lot less than $10 million.

330 million (American population) * 0.85 (non elderly percentage in US) * 0.02 (approximate hospitalization rate for non-elderly COVID cases) = 5.6 million people you will need to cram into our 1 million hospital beds

Yes, if everyone caught the virus on the exact same day, we would be 4+ million beds short. Except, people recover in about 2 weeks. So, as long as everyone getting infected is spread out over 2 months or so, we have enough beds. Since it probably won't be perfectly distributed, let's call it over 4 months so we don't have local shortages.

Do you really think we would have the disease spread through 100% of the population in only 4 months? Even measles, which is almost 10x as contagious didn't manage that - even before we had the vaccine.

American culture allowed the virus to take hold in the US, catapulting the US to the number two position in COVID19 deaths, behind Italy. The US is set to overtake Italy by the end of the Easter weekend.

Why do you blame American culture instead of the fact the US has 5x the population of Italy? (325 million vs. 60 million)

Deaths per million for Italy is 302. For the US it is only 50. Is Trump to blame for Italy's higher numbers? Or for Spain's at 339? Or France's at 187? It's not cases per million, so please don't claim it's due to a lack of testing.

Also, before you say the U.S. just got hit later, they have leveled off in deaths the last few days - which makes sense since it lags the leveling off of new cases by a few days. (~30k new cases per day for the last week; 2k deaths per day for the last 3 days.)

Perhaps the U.S. - despite all of the negative press around its response - is doing a better job than a lot of other countries. Was it a perfect response? No, it wasn't. However, it definitely isn't the worst response in the world.

How weird and different is COBOL that a decent C++ programmer couldn't pick it up in a few days?

I hate this kind of thinking. Yes, you can learn the syntax and can make programs work in a few days of working with a new language. However, you don't actually know that language. They all have issues - which you won't know about without years of experience - and they all have different ways of optimizing things. In fact, it's almost like they are different languages, designed for different things, with a lot of different experience required to master tham.

Saying "you can just pick it up" is like saying a quarterback can be a pitcher because both are just throwing a ball. Sure, a gifted athlete can switch and operate at a good intramural level - but that doesn't mean they are really good at it.

The problem isn't necessarily tracking the hundreds and fiftys from a bank or ATM. The problem is you use the fifty to buy breakfast from Pie Face and get a couple of twenties as change. The bank might know the fifty was you, and the twenties went out to Pie Face when they did a bank run the day before, but they have no idea who they are going to.

Then you use the twenty to buy coffee at Dutch Smuggler, getting a ten back that someone else used to get their coffee, but they got that bill as change from the cashier at the ferry who got it from a tourist who wanted to go to the zoo. Then, you use that ten later to get a Tooheys - which is given as change to someone else, who uses it the next day to buy breakfast, and the restaurant ends up keeping it to have their cash drawer ready for the next day and all tracking of those smaller bills becomes useless since it doesn't hit a bank for a few days or a week (or more).
