Comment Unions go home (Score 1) 90

I want nothing to do with being in a union and I hope to God my work never gets one. And if they do get a union, I hope I'm not forced to join one.

My wife has been trying to get out of here union for well over a decade, and everyone says ti can be done, but no one knows how to do it.

My wife's best friend, who is a paralegal, was forced into a union. The law firm unanimously voted the union out, and the union sued the law firm for union busting.

My SIL worked for a restaurant that went union. It's no longer in business. When the guy tried to re-open a new restaurant in the same location, the union sued him trying to force the new restaurant to be union.

Unions CAN do a lot of good. But the unions we have in the US are just toxic. We need labor unions like they have in the nordic countries and the way we do them in the US.

Comment Competition is the answer (Score 1) 80

I live in a market where I have a choice of ISPs. I can pick either Comcast or Verizon FiOS. I can also do DSL. Nowhere in this area are there any data caps. And my price is significantly lower than what some of coworkers pay. I have a triply play (home phone, Internet and TV) for bi-directional gigabit FiOS and my bill is only $129.00 a month. And that includes a CableCard rental.

You can continue to try to regulate ISPs, which is only as good as the next election cycle, or you can foster actual free-market competition is a far more long-lasting solution.

Comment The era of the office tower is at an end (Score 1) 288

No one is going back to the office unless they absolutely have to. I know people that quit their jobs because they were told to go back to the office. My company said, unless you are customer facing, the 5 day work week is dead to you. We are in the era of the home-office now.

Comment Sounds like the same beef the Open BSD project has (Score 1) 419

Open BSD has complained for well over decade, maybe two, that every *nix and BSD OS, including MacOS all user openSSL and openssh, but no one has ever contributed one line of code to either project or offered a donation to the Open BSB Project. But they've never deliberately hosed their own code to make a point. Honestly, would it kill these companies to throw this guy a few dollars. every once in a while?

Comment The problem with Reddit (Score 5, Insightful) 331

I think the problem we have now with reddit is that we have people screaming that "disinformation" needs to be banned. But "disinformation" is what they consider disinformation. For example, there is a new study out of Canada that does a bunch of number crunching and experimentation and says:

  • 1. Cloth and surgical masks are only 10% effective
  • 1. N95 masks are about 50% effective
  • 1. Social distancing is useless because COVID-19 is essentially airborne
  • 4. Wiping down surfaces does little to nothing to stop the spread of COVID-19
  • 5. The BEST THING anyone can do for COVID-19 protection is to vent the room and replace the air in it with fresh air to get all the airborne virus particles out of it before people can inhale them

They recommend N95/KN95 masks and good room ventilation as the best defense against COVID-19

I read the whole paper and there some really good science to back up all their claims.

Well, a lot of this goes against current CDC guidelines. And if you link to the paper on Reddit, the downvote brigade will destroy you and you'll be reported. A lot of these people treat emerging science about COVID-19 as evil.

I think it's everyone's job to do what they can to end the pandemic. But there's a LOT of people talking about rouding up unvaccinated people and just shooting them.

It's very hard to have a civil discussion on Reddit these days.
