Comment People told not to go (Score 0, Troll) 118

In the US people were told explicitly to avoid going to the ER except for true emergencies, for fear that Chinese coronavirus could spread easily. My father had an emergency in April and called 911 to request an ambulance. The parametecs treated him at his home and told him to stay away from the ER unless his condition worsened.

Laser Scans Reveal Maya 'Megalopolis' Below Guatemalan Jungle (nationalgeographic.com) 64

Laser-toting archaeologists have discovered an entire new city in the Central American jungle, the National Geographic reported this week. From the report: In what's being hailed as a "major breakthrough" in Maya archaeology, researchers have identified the ruins of more than 60,000 houses, palaces, elevated highways, and other human-made features that have been hidden for centuries under the jungles of northern Guatemala. Using a revolutionary technology known as LiDAR (short for "Light Detection And Ranging"), scholars digitally removed the tree canopy from aerial images of the now-unpopulated landscape, revealing the ruins of a sprawling pre-Columbian civilization that was far more complex and interconnected than most Maya specialists had supposed. "The LiDAR images make it clear that this entire region was a settlement system whose scale and population density had been grossly underestimated," said Thomas Garrison, an Ithaca College archaeologist and National Geographic Explorer who specializes in using digital technology for archaeological research.

I tried installing a few different versions (Fedora, Gentoo) on my old Surface Pro 1. Getting things like the pen, suspend and resume, the volume buttons, etc. to work properly proved to be too difficult -- things I'd found online for making regular laptops behave didn't seem to work. I use it in my workshop as a PC replacement, but using it as a 2-in-1 laptop/tablet doesn't seem possible with linux.

What's missing with all these low-cost printers is a management team that can actually plan ahead, maintain inventory, and ship when you order. I hate the idea of having to pay a deposit, get on the waiting list, then (hopefully) get it a month or two later. Why don't they build inventory before flaunting their wares?

I ordered an Ez3D Phoenix back in May, got asked to pay the remaining half of the invoice in September, and still haven't gotten it. Fortunately it wasn't expensive. Otherwise I'd be tempted to sue for fraud just to make their lives miserable.

Seriously, these outfits need to learn how to run a business.
