I'm all for advertising to pay for content. I have the option here on Slashdot to disable advertising, but have chosen not to because it's unobtrusive and helps fund a site I otherwise use for free. The problem with your line of thought is that with DishTV and it's ilk I pay twice for content - once on my monthly bill and once by having to watch the commercials that support free broadcast tv. All DirectTV seems to be doing is acknowledging this; can't say I'm sorry if it makes it harder for you to effectively bill me twice for content.

No, but I could have my identity stolen, bank accounts compromised, vital information about friends/family/co-workers/customers stolen, etc. Looking only at one extreme possibility (or non-possibility, as you used) is, well, pretty damn narrow-minded.

I'm not saying it's true or that I believe, but given that roughly 75% of the universe is composed of stuff we can't measure - dark matter and dark energy - I'll still give it a bit of room for consideration. There's so much we don't know.

Reboot from an external disk (i.e. USB stick) and run your antivirus from there. In this day and age of advanced malware, it's probably a good idea to do that every so often anyways.

I learned on AppleSoft BASIC, which had 'gosub' as well as 'goto', and we were encouraged to use the former instead of the latter and build our programs as modular as possible. Still had line numbers, variables were all global (and only the first 2 letters were relevant) so you had to be careful, but I was able to write a lot with it - a BBS for example. If a program became too big, I'd break it up and pass data between the sub-apps with a text file. This was the mid-80's.

Seems to be a lot of it on the top portion of the window. I've noticed this same thing in Ubuntu - i.e. Rhythmbox. Seems like better use could be made of the title and menu bar space. IMHO.

Does the ticket contain the concert? No, it lets you in the door. When you go to a concert, what media actually holds the concert - where's the container? Keys are not the car. I'm with mh1997.
